Under direct supervision of the Hays County Justice of the Peace Judges, the Juvenile Diversion Coordinator provides case management services to juveniles and their families in the Hays County area, including Buda, Kyle, Wimberley, Dripping Springs, and San Marcos. Coordinates diversion activities and requirements with community services, specialized training providers, and local school authorities to implement programs for juvenile offenders or develop preventative programs for juveniles. The product of the employee’s work affects the public, the immediate staff of the department, as well as other county employees.
Individuals in this position serve at the pleasure of the current elected official.
Examples of duties
- Reviews case history to determine eligibility and suitability in the Juvenile Diversion Program; coordinates diversion and court services to serve juvenile defendants and their families.
- Prepares juvenile cases for the judge prior to and during juvenile court dockets.
- Monitors juvenile compliance with court orders.
- Presents and maintains diversion agreements.
- Maintains contact with juveniles and their families to provide direction and assistance in obtaining appropriate services.
- Monitors juvenile compliance with court orders.
- Coordinates enforcement efforts with other agencies and law enforcement.
- Establishes cooperative programs with community-based organizations to identify offenders or preventive programs for juveniles.
- Works with local school authorities to identify and implement programs for juvenile offenders or preventive programs for juveniles.
- Develops, implements and evaluates outreach programs for local schools, youth serving agencies and interested community organizations.
- Responds to various types of court case-related inquiries, provides information regarding court policies and procedures.
- Receives, processes, documents, and receipts payments for court fees and fines.
- Assists the public with various types of requests including but not limited to court dates, payment plans, and/or deferred disposition.
- Arranges for community service work projects for appropriate youth involved in the Diversion Program.
- Authorizes diversions of juveniles charged with certain offenses punishable by imposition of a fine from criminal adjudication that emphasizes accountability and responsibility of the parent and the child for the child’s conduct while also promoting community safety.
- Conducts court-related clerical support duties.
- Processes various types of court documents including but not limited to complaints, affidavits, warrants, citations, requests and motions.
- Schedules and coordinates court proceedings and notifies participants.
- Responds to inquiries from the Judge regarding individual cases.
- Provides defendants with appropriate case file documentation.
- Complies and prepares data and statistics on the Diversion and Prevention program.
- Sends out correspondence to defendants.
- Performs other duties that are assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Criminal Justice, Behavioral Science or a related field, required.
- Three years’ experience working with students and or juveniles.
- Previous experience as a juvenile case manager or coordinator.
- Bilingual (Spanish and English) preferred.
