The Junior Underwriter reviews and assesses applications for life insurance, by acting promptly while exercising sound, objective and consistent judgment in making underwriting decisions. He/ She is required to follow established risk classification principles that differentiate fairly on the basis of sound actuarial principles and/or reasonable anticipated mortality or morbidity experience. Additionally, the junior underwriter grants approval of coverage up to pre-determined limits subject to the underwriting manager’s discretion.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Underwriting:

• Underwrite applications for individual life insurance within specified time period.

• Update relevant systems (Ingenium/UWPro) with underwriting decisions.

• Send emails to branches of requirements ordered, update relevant systems & upload to MFiles accordingly.

• Consult Chief Medical Officer (CMO) as and when required.

• Refer applications to Reinsurers as necessary, including submission of email to underwriting support staff.

• Assist agents with underwriting queries.

• Contact client, doctors and companies to secure additional or clarify information as necessary.

• Full and accurate completion of the UDS.

• Send emails to the branch and the case officer notifying of exclusion clauses.

• Refer all underwriting decisions outside underwriting authority for review; authorization limit set at manager’s discretion; subject to revision.

2. Substandard Processes:

• Include details of reason for decision in Underwriting Record.

• Submit confirmation email on cases to postpone / decline.

• Request information from other companies, doctors as necessary for substandard review.

3. General:

• Regularly attend training sessions and meetings as required by the Department.

• Respond to queries within the customer service standards timelines.

• Maintain and update codes in systems relative to underwriting functions.

4. To perform any other job-related duties that may be assigned by the Senior Underwriter Team Leader and the Senior Manager.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• 5 CXC/CSEC/CAPE passes including Mathematics, English Language & Biology or Human & Social Biology

• 2 A’ Level/CAPE passes

• ALMI/FLMI designation

• UND 386

• 3 years’ work experience in the Insurance Industry

• 2 years’ underwriting experience

• Knowledge of all company products

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:

As a regulated entity with obligations under the Know Your Employee guidelines, a Certificate of Character is required.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:

The Junior Underwriter must be flexible, highly adaptive to changes in the organisation and possess excellent interpersonal skills, with a strong customer service focus. He/ She must be a very meticulous, organised and detail oriented individual. The individual must possess strong problem-solving skills and be able to make sound decisions.
