Job Description

Junior Software Engineer

Department: Engineering

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Remote (select US states)

Compensation: $91,800 - $102,000 / year

Description

We are looking for a curious, conscientious, and fast-learning Junior Software Engineer to join our growing, distributed team supporting a federal government client at Coforma.

As a Junior Software Engineer, you'll write real production code early on, with support. You'll pick up well-scoped tickets, pair with senior engineers, and grow into larger pieces of the system over time. We are not looking for someone who already knows our stack; we are looking for someone with solid programming fundamentals, genuine curiosity, and the habit of following a problem until they actually understand it.

We will teach you Dynamics, Azure Government, and the overall integration landscape. You need to bring the programming fundamentals and the willingness to learn.

If you're passionate about improving lives through digital products and services, then Coforma is a great company for you.

$91,800 to $102,000 Annual Salary + Benefits + Growth Potential

Placement within this range will be based on the competency level of the candidate. An offer will be made at one of the following tiers:

  • Tier 1 — $91,800.00: Meets stated qualification and experience requirements. May need guidance and training beyond onboarding to perform the more complex functions of the role.
  • Tier 2 — $96,900.00: Fully competent and able to independently perform key responsibilities of the role once onboarding is completed.
  • Tier 3 — $102,000.00: Highly experienced and can perform all responsibilities of the role at a higher level than expected once onboarding is completed.

To honor our company-wide equitable pay system, the posted salary range and corresponding tier salaries are non-negotiable.

You must be a full-time resident of the contiguous United States and legally authorized to work in the US now and in the future without sponsorship to be considered for this role. The selected candidate must be willing to undergo and able to pass a Public Trust background check and any applicable background and/or security checks related to the project.

This is a US-based remote position open to applicants in the states listed below. Some travel may be required.

To ensure we remain compliant with all state, county, and local employment and tax regulations, applicants must currently reside in one of the following states to be considered for employment with Coforma. This list will be updated periodically as our PeopleOps team works to open up hiring in additional states.

What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities)

You'll be working on building a large scale travel reimbursement system for a government client. The system spans a Microsoft Dynamics 365 staff-facing portal, a .NET claims and reimbursement API running in Azure Government, an auto-adjudication rules engine, and integrations with a dozen internal and external systems that handle identity, eligibility, and payment.

A typical day would include the following tasks and responsibilities:

  • Write, test, and ship well-scoped production code in C#/.NET, with guidance from senior engineers
  • Write automated tests for your own work, and help grow the team's test coverage
  • Participate in code review, both receiving feedback and, over time, giving it
  • Pair with senior engineers on larger features to learn the system's architecture and the reasoning behind it
  • Help investigate and fix production bugs, learning to read logs, traces, and Application Insights telemetry
  • Make configuration and customization changes in Microsoft Dynamics 365/Dataverse and Power Platform, with training and support
  • Write and maintain clear technical documentation as you learn areas of the system
  • Participate in sprint ceremonies, estimate your own work, and communicate progress and blockers early
  • Follow secure coding practices appropriate to a system handling PII and payment data, under a federal Authority to Operate

In Your First 30 Days, You Will:

  • Complete new hire orientation training and familiarize yourself with the Coforma Field Guide
  • Meet your project team and external counterparts and understand who is responsible for what
  • Get your development and non-production environments working
  • Ship your first small production change with support from a senior engineer
  • Build a basic mental model of how the Dynamics portal, the .NET APIs, and client system integrations fit together

After 60 Days:

  • Independently complete well-scoped tickets with normal code review
  • Write tests as a default part of your work rather than an afterthought
  • Debug straightforward production issues with minimal guidance
  • Ask thoughtful, specific questions that show you've investigated first

After 90 Days and Beyond:

  • Take on tickets of increasing scope and ambiguity
  • Contribute useful review comments on teammates' pull requests
  • Own a small area of the codebase and become a reliable point of contact for it
  • Identify and propose small improvements to code quality, tests, or documentation

Who You Are and What You Know (Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Requirements)

  • A minimum of one year of professional software engineering experience, OR equivalent experience through a degree in computer science or a related field, a coding bootcamp, military service, apprenticeship, open-source contribution, or demonstrated self-taught work (2+ years is preferred)
  • Working proficiency in at least one object-oriented or general-purpose programming language (C# strongly preferred); Java, Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, Go, or C++ are all reasonable starting points if you're willing to work primarily in C#
  • Understanding of core programming fundamentals: data structures, control flow, functions and classes, error handling, and reading someone else's code
  • Familiarity with SQL and relational database concepts, including tables, keys, joins
  • Basic understanding of HTTP, REST APIs, and JSON
  • Experience using Git for version control, including branches and pull requests
  • Some exposure to automated testing (unit tests at minimum) and a willingness to make it a habit
  • Clear written and verbal communication with the ability to explain what you did, what you tried, and where you're stuck
  • Genuine curiosity and persistence: you dig into a problem before asking, and you ask clearly when you're actually blocked
  • Comfortable asking for help and working on a remote team distributed across multiple time zones
  • Full-time resident of the contiguous United States (must be legally authorized to work in the US now and in the future without sponsorship)
  • Ability to pass a Public Trust background check and any applicable background and/or security checks related to project requirements

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience with C# and .NET specifically
  • Any exposure to Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Dynamics 365/Dataverse, or the Power Platform
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, GitHub Actions, or Azure DevOps
  • Exposure to cloud concepts—managed services, environments, deployments, logging
  • Front-end experience with TypeScript and a modern framework
  • Awareness of web accessibility (Section 508/WCAG) and secure coding basics
  • Interest in or prior exposure to federal government or civic technology work
  • Experience working in an agile team with sprints and code review

Other

  • Internet: Will prioritize and maintain access to strong, reliable internet for the remote nature of our work, except when on vacation or holiday.
  • Security: Will keep the highest security practices to ensure privacy and security of Coforma and client information, given the nature of our work, even when on vacation.
  • Travel Flexibility: On request and with advanced notice, will attend in-person events such as meetings, workshops, and trainings as assigned for projects that require it.
  • Brand Representation: Will represent Coforma professionally and sincerely, modeling our Company Values in all interactions.
