Purpose of the Role

BGIS is seeking a motivated Junior Quantity Surveyor to support the delivery of residential retrofit and construction projects by providing accurate estimating, variation management, tender analysis, and financial project reporting. Reporting directly to the Quantity Surveyor Team Lead, you will work collaboratively with BGIS project teams, subcontractors, and external stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered efficiently, competitively, and within budget.

This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate, undergraduate student, or someone early in their Quantity Surveying career who is looking to build their experience within a supportive and growing team.

The ideal candidate will be proactive, detail-oriented, eager to learn, and passionate about developing a long-term career in the construction industry.

Key Responsibilities
  • Measure, estimate, and prepare variations for residential retrofit works in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Review and assess subcontractor pricing for prospective residential projects.
  • Measure, scope, and prepare tender documentation from project drawings and specifications.
  • Prepare financial project reporting, including variations and claims management.
  • Issue requests for pricing to subcontractors and evaluate responses.
  • Work closely with Project Managers, architects, consultants, subcontractors, and client representatives.
  • Support the QS team in maintaining cost accuracy and commercial performance across projects.
  • Assist in reviewing tender submissions to ensure competitive market pricing.
Education, Experience & Skills Essential
  • Tertiary study in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Building, or a related discipline (undergraduates and graduates are encouraged to apply).
  • Some experience or exposure to the construction industry.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to interpret construction documentation and drawings.
  • Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Desirable
  • Previous experience using construction rates, estimating, or quantity surveying principles.
  • Exposure to residential construction or retrofit projects.
  • Experience preparing tenders, variations, or project cost reports.
  • Knowledge of New Zealand construction practices and contracts.
