Job Description

About the role

We're looking for a highly organised coordinator to own the production pipeline that turns accepted academic articles into published research. This is a role for someone who thrives on systems, schedules, and getting the details exactly right — who can keep dozens of articles moving through copy-editing, layout, proofing, and publication at once without dropping a single one. You'll be the person who keeps production on track: setting and holding deadlines, coordinating copyediting, typesetting, and proofreading , checking every change against our style sheets, and signing off final files for online and print publication. If you get genuine satisfaction from a clean tracker, a met deadline, and a flawless proof, this is your kind of work.

What you'll do

  • Own the production schedule across multiple journals — tracking every article from acceptance to publication and keeping it on time.

  • Coordinate copyediting, typesetting, and proofreading vendors, keeping communication clear, organised, and moving.

  • Collate all author and editor changes onto a single proof, verifying each against the Journal Style Sheet and House Style before approval — and checking every implemented change for accuracy.

  • Quality-check the work of copy editors and proofreaders against our house standards and British English conventions.

  • Confirm and check final publishing formats: PDF, XML, HTML, and EPUB.

  • Process invoices and purchase orders accurately and on time.

  • Monitor production metrics (e.g. page usage) and publish final manuscripts online, accurately and accessibly.

Who we're looking for

You don't need a specific degree — we care more about how you're wired and what you can demonstrate. You'll be a strong fit if you:

  • Are meticulous, systematic, and deadline-driven, and genuinely enjoy structured, detail-heavy work.

  • Can hold others (authors, editors, vendors) to a schedule firmly and diplomatically.

  • Have excellent written English and a sharp eye for grammar, spelling, and consistency (British English a plus).

  • Work independently and manage your own time under tight, recurring deadlines.

Useful backgrounds

Any of these — or equivalent experience:

  • Language editing / language practice, or

  • Library & Information Science, or

  • Publishing studies / a publishing diploma or internship, or

  • Project, production, or operations coordination in a content or document environment, or

  • Administrative, QA, or records work with strong written English.

Nice to have

  • Experience in publishing or a publisher internship.

  • Familiarity with Open Access publishing principles.

  • Proficiency with proofreading and production tools and software.

How to apply

Shortlisted candidates will complete a short profile assessment and a brief proofreading and accuracy exercise as part of the selection process. This is an office-based position in Durbanville, Cape Town; it is not available as remote work.
