Job Description

Junior Engineer – BESS Technology & Supplier Management

About Return
Return is the leading European independent energy storage provider, committed to revolutionizing the energy sector. Headquartered in Amsterdam and offices in Munich, Hamburg and Berlin, Return offers innovative, sustainable solutions to store and intelligently manage energy, ensuring power is used efficiently when and where it’s needed most. With a growing presence across Europe, Return is at the forefront of the energy transition, integrating large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) to support grid stability, renewable energy integration, and Europe's net-zero goals. Driven by a team of experts, Return aims to provide reliable energy storage that powers the future of clean energy.

About the Role
Return is building one of Europe's largest renewable energy portfolios, with a rapidly growing pipeline of battery energy storage systems (BESS) projects across the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Poland, and beyond. As many of these projects move into the contracting phase, we're scaling up our engineering and procurement capability to match our ambitions.

At Return Engineering and Procurement is one department, we believe that this is vital in a new industry where technology is changing fast and technical requirements are not fully established yet.

Our procurement team has developed a smart, standardised approach to handle projects at scale; clustering contracts, streamlining processes, and driving consistency across technical, commercial, and contractual dimensions. To bring this into execution, we're looking for a driven and junior BESS engineer with a team player attitude and commercial fingerspitzen gefühl to join our team.

What You'll Do

You will be part of an experienced engineering team developing and delivering large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across Germany. As Junior Engineer, you are the linking pin between our teams (e.g. project developers, origination, asset management) and our BESS and PCS suppliers. You capture our technical requirements from your colleagues and translate them into concrete requests to the battery suppliers. In close cooperation with the senior engineer and your procurement colleagues, you will drive their resolution with manufacturers – keeping multiple supplier threads moving in parallel and making sure the right information reaches us in time.

  • You will work closely with a senior engineer who will actively mentor you and build you up over time. From day one, you take on real responsibility.

  • Capture and structure technical requirements from within the Return.

  • Derive and formulate specific technical questions for BESS and PCS manufacturers.

  • Coordinate and follow up parallel communication with multiple suppliers.

  • Ensure timely delivery of technical information and document outcomes.

  • Prepare data analyses and technical comparisons and present that to the engineering team for decision making.

  • Collaborate closely with the senior engineer and progressively take on more ownership.

Who You Are

You have a background in electrical engineering or a closely related field, giving you the technical foundation to engage credibly with BESS and PCS manufacturers. You are comfortable working with data – Excel is a natural tool for you, not an obstacle – and you can structure information clearly even when inputs are messy or incomplete.

What matters most is how you work: you are organised, proactive, and willing to follow up until you get a proper answer. You don't let things stall on the supplier side. You can manage several parallel threads without losing track, and you communicate clearly both internally and externally.

If you have already worked on BESS or energy storage projects – even at the edges – that is a genuine advantage. The same goes for experience with PCS or inverter technology. Fluency in both German and English is a plus given our international team setup.

Most importantly: you are ambitious and genuinely excited about battery storage. We are building large systems that matter, and we want someone who is here for that.

What We Offer

At Return, you'll be joining a young, ambitious, and close-knit team that's genuinely passionate about accelerating Europe's energy transition.

  • Dedicated mentoring by a senior engineer – you will be actively developed, not left to figure things out alone

  • Real responsibility from day one, not a support function

  • Full exposure to the lifecycle of large-scale BESS projects

  • A motivated, experienced, international team with real project dynamics

  • Munich, with flexible working arrangements

We offer:

  • A dynamic, informal culture where your ideas are heard and valued.

  • Real ownership and room to grow, this isn't a box-ticking role.

  • The chance to make a tangible impact on Europe's renewable energy future.

  • A front-row seat in one of the fastest-growing markets in the energy sector.

  • A competitive salary and benefits package.
