MANTECH seeks a motivated, career- and customer-oriented Jr Data Scientist to join our innovative team in Ashburn, VA This is a part time hybrid position with 1 day onsite a week.

Each day U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) oversees the massive flow of people, capital, and products that enter and depart the United States via air, land, sea, and cyberspace. The volume and complexity of both physical and virtual border crossings require the application of “big data” solutions to promote efficient trade and travel. These solutions provide CBP personnel with additional tools to evaluate potential threats from legitimate trade and travel.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Research and experiment with state-of-the-art AI/ML methods (LLMs, generative AI).
  • Work with senior engineers to package, test, and deploy AI/ML models in real operational environments.
  • Collect, evaluate, analyze and abstract data from specific sources
  • Identify, review, and evaluate large volumes of sensitive and complex intelligence data pertaining to CBP initiatives
  • Collaborate with intel analysts, enterprise/application architects, database architects, data scientists, and mission stakeholders.
  • Exercise inductive and deductive reasoning using established intelligence techniques to analyze data from a variety of sources to develop trends, patterns, profiles, estimates, studies, and tactical interdiction information
  • Brief project management, technical design, and outcomes to both technical and non-technical audiences throughout the project lifecycle through written as well as virtual reporting.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school and 0-6 years’ experience; associate degree and 0-4 years’ experience; or Bachelor of Science and 0-2 years’ experience.
  • Coursework related and/or prior internship related to data analytics or GenAI.
  • Knowledge of Python, or Java and experience working with SQL.
  • Experience in Data Processing, AI enabled workflows using python
  • Experience working in law enforcement or classified intelligence analysis environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Awareness of AI compliance, data privacy, and responsible AI principles
  • Understanding of software engineering best practices (Git, CI/CD)
  • Understanding of the CBP targeting environment and applications
  • Prior National Targeting Center (NTC) experience, preferably with proficiency in operational data analysis.
  • Experience working within an Agile development environment.

Clearance Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain DHS CBP suitability prior to starting this position.

Physical Requirements:

  • The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, or to communicate with coworkers, management, and customers, which may involve delivering presentations.
