The Junior Counselor Position is responsible for the planning, implementation, and facilitation of Frost Valley YMCA’s Summer Day Camp for campers aged 4-16. This position focuses on camper safety, activity planning, and ensuring a positive camp experience. Junior Counselors will also serve as role models for all campers.


Requirements

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Camper Supervision and Safety:
    • Program Planning and Preparation: Plan, prepare, and lead engaging weekly activities tailored to the interests and developmental levels of your camper group.
    • Support campers in day to day activities
  • Record Keeping:
    • Maintain accurate attendance, behavior, and daily paperwork for your assigned groups.
  • Role Modeling:
    • Serve as a positive role model for campers by demonstrating professionalism, empathy, and a commitment to camp values.
  • Safety Standards and Compliance:
    • Support safety protocols and help maintain compliance with American Camp Association and Ulster County Board of Health standards for a day camp serving over 200 campers per session.
  • Collaboration:
    • Coordinate with multiple departments to uphold the standards and reputation of Summer Day Camp and Frost Valley YMCA.
  • Additional Duties:
    • Perform other tasks as assigned to support the camp’s mission and daily operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior experience working with children aged 4-16 or a strong interest in doing so.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, multitask, and handle high-energy environments.
  • Enthusiasm for working with children, teens, families, and camp staff

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
  • The employee may be required to stand on their feet for long periods of time.
  • Employee must be able to occasionally traverse rough terrain.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
