Job Description

Your Opportunity to SHINE ON:

At the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg, we believe that belonging is the heart of potential, and for more than 130 years, Camp Stephens—owned and operated by the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg—has brought this belief to life through exceptional overnight camp experiences on its island site in the heart of Lake of the Woods, near Kenora, Ontario. Guided by The Y Way and our commitment to Shine On Experiences, Camp Stephens fosters a culture where safety, inclusion, growth, and community are embedded in everything we do.

As a Junior Cabin Leader, you will play an important supportive role in creating a safe, positive, and welcoming camp experience. Working under the guidance of Cabin Leaders and Section Coordinators, you will assist in supervising campers, supporting activities, and helping build strong connections within your cabin group. This role is ideal for individuals under 18 who are eager to develop leadership skills while gaining hands-on experience in a dynamic camp environment.

WHY you’ll love Camp Stephens:

Working at Camp Stephens means being part of a values-driven, people-first culture grounded in inclusiveness, well-being, sustainability, and inspiration. You will live and work in a unique wilderness environment, build strong relationships with campers and peers, and contribute to life-changing outdoor experiences while being supported by a passionate leadership team that values belonging, learning, and personal growth.

HOW you’ll create Moments that Matter:

You will support Cabin Leaders in supervising and engaging a cabin group while serving as a positive role model who demonstrates respect, enthusiasm, and inclusivity. You will assist in planning and delivering age-appropriate activities, encourage teamwork, and help foster a safe and welcoming cabin environment. You will also provide individualized support to ensure campers’ physical and emotional well-being, assist with documentation and activity logs, and help manage supplies, schedules, and daily transitions to ensure a smooth and meaningful camp experience.

You’ll bring:

  • Experience working with children or youth in a volunteer, recreational, or school setting
  • A positive attitude and strong communication skills
  • Willingness to learn and grow as a leader in a supportive environment
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based setting
  • Adaptability and comfort working outdoors in a fast-paced camp environment
  • Commitment to completing the Y Winnipeg Camp Stephens Training Pathway (paid training provided if certifications are not yet obtained)
  • Required certifications: Intermediate First Aid with CPR-C

How Y Winnipeg Supports Your Impact:

  • Compensation: $45.83 - $55.83 per day
  • Professional Development: Paid training and certification opportunities; applicants who do not yet have all required certifications are encouraged to apply, as training and support may be available
  • On-site Accommodation: Includes board and lodging while on trip
  • Wellness: Complimentary Y membership and access to Employee Assistance Program
  • A supportive, mission-driven environment where your leadership and contributions are valued
