Position SummaryUnder the direction of engineers of a higher grade, the incumbents of this position assist in the preparation of structural design calculations for bridge repairs such as bridge deck replacements and beam end repairs for bridges of normal complexity, bridge design plans and details, and bridge repair quantities and special provisions. Incumbents also assist in the review and project management of bridge preservation projects.Duties and ResponsibilitiesPerforms calculations such as those related to the preparation of structural design for bridge elements and repairs for bridges of normal complexity in accordance with AASHTO specifications and MassDOT standards. Prepares elements of repair plans and details in accordance with MassDOT standards. Performs calculations such as those related to the preparation of bridge construction material quantity and bridge project cost estimates. Participates in reviews of shop drawings in relation to construction procedures and to determine compliance with design intent for repairs and preservation actions designed by the Bridge Preservation Unit. Assists with reviews of preservation projects of standard complexity for completeness, technical correctness, and coordination of specifications and estimates with work to be completed. Supports the preparation of submissions of projects for advertisement and assists in project award. Preferred QualificationsKnowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering.Knowledge of the terminology and standard abbreviations used in civil engineering.Knowledge of the principles of hydraulics as applied to surface drainage pipes and culverts.Knowledge of the engineering properties of soils.Knowledge of the properties and characteristics of concrete and asphalt; mechanical properties of fluids; theory and practice of plane surveying.Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment and materials used in building, bridge, highway, road, street or tunnel construction.Knowledge of the types & skill in the uses of equipment used in plane surveying; knowledge of the methods of soil testing.Knowledge of mathematical formulae used to compute volumes and areas.Knowledge of mathematical computations used in solving civil engineering problems.Knowledge of elementary algebra, trigonometry, plane and solid geometry, integral and differential calculus; knowledge of the standard procedures for taking field notes in connection with plane surveying.Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of civil engineering data, to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. Ability to understand, apply and explain the laws, rules, regulations, procedures, specifications and guidelines governing assigned unit activities and in connection with the construction and maintenance of highways, bridges, buildings, etc.This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus (“Signing Bonus”) if you are newly hired at MassDOT. Current MassDOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus.
