Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Junior Accountant maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and coordinates intermediate level accounting functions such as accounts payables, general ledger/account maintenance, account reconciliation, data processing and reporting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Accounts Payable

  1. Prepares monthly YMCA invoices and maintains Accounts Payable subledger within Financial Edge and AppFolio.
  2. Reviews and matches purchase orders with invoices while reviewing financial agreements for accuracy, compliance, and adherence to approved budget and forecast.
  3. Assists management with vendor analysis and identifies potential cost-saving opportunities.
  4. Selection of invoices for payment based on due dates and preparation of disbursement reports for approval. Prints and distributes checks and initiates electronic transfers once approved.
  5. Communicates with vendors and YMCA management to resolve billing and payment inquiries
  6. Identifies and recommends procedures to improve Accounts payable reporting and monitors cash availability for payment runs for the YMCA and affiliated entities.
  7. Responsible for Accounts Payable reports in Financial Edge and AppFolio.
  8. Reconciles Accounts Payable report detail and control accounts to the balance sheet.
  9. Assists with Credit Card Reconciliations, expense allocations and supporting documentation.

General Accounting

  1. Performs general ledger account analysis and reconciliation of assigned accounts and prepares reconciliation adjustments and posts adjusting journal entries to Financial Edge and AppFolio.
  2. Prepares documentation and supporting schedules for annual audit, including accounts payable, contracts, lease agreements, fixed assets, and other accounts that may be assigned
  3. Responsible for preparation, distribution and filing of IRS Form 1099s
  4. Adhere to internal controls and procedures in accordance with accounting standards, federal, and state financial requirements.
  5. Assist in the preparation of monthly cash flow forecasts.
  6. Supports compliance with the YMCA's record retention policies and assists with maintaining required financial records in accordance with established retention schedules.
  7. Assist with check runs, posting rent payments and late fees for Property Groups when needed
  8. Responsible for the tracking and submission of unclaimed property to the Commonwealth
  9. Records, reconciles, and assists with review of YMCA financial lease agreements
  10. Assist Corporate Office staff with other projects and tasks as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate's degree in accounting/ related field plus at least 1 year of accounting experience, OR equivalent work experience of a minimum of 2 years in an accounting role.
  • Knowledge of and expertise in computerized accounting systems and sound working knowledge of spreadsheets and word processing
  • Efficient problem-solving skills
  • Must be highly organized and could work with confidential matters
