Job Title: Journeyman Diesel Mechanic
Location: Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota
Company: I-State Truck Center
Pay Range: $25.00-45.00/hour DOE

Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and Repair: Troubleshoot complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems on heavy-duty diesel trucks using advanced diagnostic tools, schematics, and technical manuals (e.g., Cummins Insite, Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link).
  • Perform Maintenance: Conduct routine preventive maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, tire inspections, brake adjustments, and chassis lubrication to ensure reliability and compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Component Replacement: Replace or repair major components such as diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, turbochargers, and brake systems.
  • Welding and Fabrication: Perform minor welding, cutting, or fabrication tasks as needed.
  • Documentation: Complete detailed service reports, document parts used, and record maintenance activities for warranty, billing, DOT compliance, and inventory purposes.
  • Customer Interaction: Communicate with fleet managers or drivers to explain repairs and provide maintenance recommendations.
  • Safety Compliance: Follow OSHA, DOT, manufacturer, and company safety standards while maintaining a clean work environment.
  • Tool and Equipment Management: Maintain tools, equipment, and diagnostic systems to ensure readiness and efficiency.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Technical diploma or certification in diesel mechanics or heavy-duty truck repair preferred

Experience:

  • 2–5 years of experience servicing heavy-duty diesel trucks (Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt, Volvo, Mack, etc.)

Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, hydraulics, and electronic controls
  • Proficiency with OEM diagnostic software and hand/power tools
  • Ability to read and interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, and schematics
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and attention to detail
  • Basic welding or fabrication skills preferred
  • Professional communication and customer service skills

Certifications:

  • OEM training (Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Paccar) or ASE T2–T8 certifications preferred
