Journey Welder/Truck Equipment Installer

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking for a sharp, skilled, and motivated Journey Welder / Truck Equipment Installer. The ideal candidate will have a strong working knowledge of welding techniques and the ability to fabricate custom parts for heavy machinery.

About the Role

As a Journeymen Welder & Truck Equipment installer, you will be a vital part of keeping our fleet and machinery moving. In this role, you will perform routine maintenance and major repairs on a wide variety of UDOT vehicles, including gasoline, diesel, and hydraulic equipment. You’ll troubleshoot and fix everyday wear and tear, from loose pins and worn bushings to broken welds. Beyond repairs, you will play a key role in custom fabrication and equipment installation. You’ll layout, cut, fit, and weld custom components to modify trucks for snow removal applications and other specialized equipment, helping to ensure our fleet is ready and to serve the people of Utah.

Wage Information

Starting at $30.75 per hour, with higher offers based on your specific experience.

Key Responsibilities

As a Journey Welder/Truck Equipment Installer, your daily responsibilities will include:

• Material Preparation & Welding: Laying out, cutting, preheating, cleaning, and fitting metal materials. You will weld, solder, braze, and grind various parts.
• Fabrication & Construction: Building and repairing structures or equipment based on verbal instructions, blueprints, and working drawings.
• Mechanical Repairs: Assembling and disassembling machinery, replacing components, and performing automotive body work.
• Diagnostics & Troubleshooting: Finding, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems in vehicles, heavy equipment, and onboard computers.
• Equipment Assembly: Modifying metal parts for special projects, and installing front and wing snowplow parts, including their hydraulic systems.
• Snow Plan: Participate in the Regional Snow Removal Plan, safely operating heavy equipment to plow snow and manage ice on the state highway system as needed.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the following requirements:

• Experience: At least four (4) years of professional mechanic experience. Relevant education may be substituted for experience year-for-year.
• Licensing: A valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
• Tools: You must provide your own full set of mechanic tools (a tool allowance is provided).
• Availability: Must be available 24/7 for overtime and varied schedules, especially during weather events.

Strong all-around mechanical skills, including experience with automotive, hydraulic, and electrical systems.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

The successful candidate should know or be able to learn the following:

• Tools & Machinery: The design, use, repair, and maintenance of various shop tools and industrial machines.
• Metallurgy & Welding: Properties of different metals, how heat penetrates metal, and standard welding methods.
• Blueprints & Schematics: How to read and interpret maps, charts, technical plans, blueprints, and electrical diagrams.
• Safety & Autonomy: How to properly use safety gear, follow written or verbal instructions, and work independently with minimal supervision.
• Knowledge and application of different welding processes such as MIG, TIG, FCAW, SMAW, and Aluminum spool gun.
• Operation of weld shop equipment such as press brake, Iron worker, plasma table, and drill presses.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

You must be willing to work under the following conditions:

• Physical Demands: This is a strenuous role. You must be able to lift over 50 pounds and work in restricted spaces (crawling, crouching, or climbing).
• Safety: You will work around heavy machinery and chemicals, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols.
