The Departments of Romance Languages and Literatures (RLL) and Anthropology in the College of Literature, Arts, and Science (LSA) at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor invite applications for a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor to build and direct a new Mellon-funded interdisciplinary program promoting Environmental Justice and the Humanities, to begin August 25, 2027.
The program, called the Environmental Justice (EJ) + Humanities Hub, centers the investigation of important environmental questions using skills grounded in narrative, ethnography, and community. The strategy for catalyzing our humanities-driven approach builds on our current strengths in LSA, the School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS), and the Program in the Environment (PitE), an undergraduate program that bridges SEAS and LSA. SEAS, LSA and PitE together have a rare combination of curriculum, expertise, and resources for supporting the EJ + Humanities Hub.
We are seeking candidates whose expertise bridges research in the environment with a Humanities or qualitative Social Science approach to Environmental Justice. We are especially interested in scholars pursuing community-engaged research on how people understand and relate to their environments. This could include narrative and storytelling, ethnography, archival research, documentary media, and multicultural dialogues concerning philosophy, politics, or ethics. They should have a proven record for developing and maintaining community-driven partnerships in the Global South, with a preference for Latin America and the Caribbean.
Applicants must demonstrate evidence of excellence in teaching and research. A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline is required prior to appointment. This is a university-year appointment with an expected start date of August 25, 2027.
