Job Description
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Mechanical Engineer with experience in commercial window (fenestration) design. The ideal candidate will have strong proficiency in AutoCAD, a solid understanding of building envelope systems, and in-depth knowledge of applicable building codes and standards. This role involves designing, analyzing, and optimizing window systems for commercial applications while ensuring compliance, performance, and manufacturability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and develop commercial window and curtain wall systems using AutoCAD
- Create detailed 2D/3D drawings, shop drawings, and fabrication packages
- Apply knowledge of fenestration systems including aluminum framing, glazing, thermal performance, and sealing systems
- Interpret and ensure compliance with local, provincial/state, and national building codes and standards
- Collaborate with architects, contractors, and project managers to meet project specifications and timelines
- Conduct design reviews, calculations, and performance analysis (structural, thermal, water/air infiltration)
- Support product development, prototyping, and testing of window systems
- Provide technical support during manufacturing and installation phases
- Review project specifications, contracts, and drawings to ensure accuracy and feasibility
- Identify opportunities for cost reduction, efficiency, and product improvement
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 5+ years of experience in fenestration, façade, or commercial window system design
- Proficiency in AutoCAD (required); experience with SolidWorks or similar CAD software is an asset
- Strong understanding of building codes (e.g., NBC, ASTM, AAMA, CSA standards)
- Knowledge of curtain wall systems, glazing methods, and aluminum extrusion design
- Experience with thermal and structural performance considerations
- Ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
- Strong communication and collaboration abilities
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation or eligibility an asset
- Experience with building envelope design and performance testing
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes in the fenestration industry
- Knowledge of energy efficiency standards and sustainability practices
