Job Description

Baylor's Honors College seeks a full professor who will hold the Jim and Sharon Harrod Chair of Christian Thought. This is a full-time tenured position within the Honors Program, one of four departments within the Honors College. Applications from distinguished scholar-teachers within the humanities are sought. Anticipated start date is August 2027.

Expectations

Combining scholarly stature in the humanities, grasp of biblical and theological resources for integrating faith and learning, and the ability to inspire scholarly and general audiences, the Harrod Chair supports Baylor's mission of educating bright undergraduates for worldwide leadership and service by uniting academic excellence and Christian faith within a caring community.

It is expected that the holder of this endowed chair will:

  • Teach and mentor undergraduates studying within the Honors College by offering 4 three-credit-hour courses annually;
  • Publish in leading academic journals and presses within his or her field;
  • Pursue grant writing in support of research, public programs, or other initiatives that elevate Christian thought for the sake of morally purposeful and culturally enriched life;
  • Address important figures, issues, and movements through books for general readership or articles in journals of public opinion, digital media, or newspaper opinion pages;
  • Strengthen a distinguished honors curriculum through his or her professional contacts and relationships with thought leaders sympathetic to Christian faith and learning;
  • Represent, through personal faith and practice, Christian intellectual life at its best.

About the Honors College: The Honors College serves ~1,400 high-ability undergraduates through academic offerings that include a degree (B.Phil.), three interdisciplinary majors, an alternative core curriculum, and a traditional thesis-based honors program. Our students pursue 90+ majors across 8 other colleges and schools at Baylor. The HC features a 40-member regular full-time faculty that span anthropology, biology, classics, communication, comparative literature, creative writing, English, French, history, medicine, philosophy, political science, social psychology, and theology. Unique within American higher education, it unites the strengths of a highly regarded liberal arts college, an ascendant national research university, and an animating Christian mission.

Qualifications

  • Qualified applicants will possess:
  • A Ph.D or equivalent terminal degree in a humanities field
  • An academic record commensurate with appointment as a tenured full professor within the Honors College
  • Evidence of high-quality classroom and seminar teaching of undergraduates and effective mentoring of students
  • A history of multi- and interdisciplinary engagement that is grounded in disciplinary expertise and attuned to the integration of Christian faith and learning
