There is a need for a Java Developer with Oracle experience to support the migration from SDWIS to DW-SFTIES which are both EPA software programs. Position Summary This position provides advanced Java development support for the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS) and the ongoing migration to the Drinking Water State-Federal-Tribal Information Exchange System (DW-SFITES). The Java Developer will serve as a key technical contributor responsible for operational support of the existing SDWIS application while advancing development and integration work required for the transition to DW-SFITES. Key Responsibilities Provide day-to-day operational support for the SDWIS application, including troubleshooting, defect resolution, and performance monitoring. Support and contribute to the technical migration effort from SDWIS to DW-SFITES, including data conversion, application redevelopment, and system integration activities. Design, develop, modify, and maintain Java-based application code in accordance with EPA standards and project requirements. Develop, consume, and modify APIs to support integration between SDWIS, DW-SFITES, and related external systems. Write, optimize, and troubleshoot advanced Oracle database queries, procedures, and data structures supporting application functionality. Collaborate with project stakeholders, technical leads, and EPA personnel to ensure continuity of operations and successful delivery of migration milestones. Document technical processes, system changes, and development activities to support knowledge transfer and continuity. Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues across the application stack, applying strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Required Skills Advanced Java development skills, with demonstrated experience building and maintaining enterprise-level applications. Advanced Oracle database skills, including query development, optimization, and data management. Experience with API utilization, creation, and modification to support system integration. Preferred Skills Experience using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude) to support and accelerate development activities. Experience with dashboard development using tools such as Power BI or Tableau. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills. Additional Information This role supports a federal EPA information system and requires the ability to work independently on both operational support and active migration/development efforts. The position requires close coordination with the broader project team to maintain continuity of SDWIS operations while advancing DW-SFITES development goals.
