Java AI Enabled Engineer (Java 21/Spring Boot/LangChain4j) - Full Remote Portugal

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

We are looking for a Senior Java AI Enabled Engineer to join an innovative technology project focused on building enterprise-grade AI solutions for a leading international company in the retail sector. This is an opportunity to work at the intersection of modern backend engineering and Generative AI, designing intelligent systems that solve real business challenges at scale.

You will contribute to the development of AI-powered backend services, autonomous AI agents, and LLM integrations while collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams in a fully remote environment. PROJECT & CONTEXT

As part of a senior engineering team, you will design and develop scalable microservices and AI-enabled applications using Java 17/21, Spring Boot, and modern AI orchestration frameworks. The project focuses on integrating Large Language Models into enterprise applications through robust REST APIs while ensuring reliability, security, observability, and maintainability.

You will architect autonomous AI agents capable of multi-step reasoning, tool orchestration, and memory management, working closely with product managers, frontend developers, data teams, and other backend engineers to deliver high-quality AI-driven solutions.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR (Required)

• 
  Minimum 7 years of professional experience in software engineering.
• 
  Strong experience developing backend applications with Java 17 or Java 21
• 
  Solid experience with Spring Boot and microservices architecture.
• 
  Hands-on experience designing and implementing Agentic AI solutions.
• 
  Experience using Spring AI or LangChain4j for AI orchestration.
• 
  Practical experience integrating Large Language Models (LLMs) into enterprise applications.
• 
  Experience consuming and developing RESTful APIs
• 
  Strong knowledge of Prompt Engineering, prompt optimization, and prompt lifecycle management.
• 
  Experience implementing reliable AI systems, including observability, guardrails, rate limiting, fallback strategies, and secure integrations.
• 
  Strong communication and collaboration skills in cross-functional Agile teams.
• 
  Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• English: B2 (Upper Intermediate) or higher.

NICE TO HAVE (Preferred)

• 
  Experience integrating Azure Copilot or other commercial AI platforms.
• 
  Knowledge of AI memory management and multi-agent architectures.
• 
  Experience with technical documentation, API documentation, and architecture documentation.
• 
  Experience working in enterprise-scale or retail technology environments.
• 
  Familiarity with AI governance, security, and responsible AI best practices.
• 
  Experience collaborating with mobile application development teams.

Compensation: €2,400 – €3,100/month net, depending on experience and seniority level.
