Job Summary
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment throughout the Sunnyside Apartments community. This position performs daily cleaning, disinfecting, trash removal, floor care, and other custodial duties in residential buildings, offices, community spaces, and common areas. The role supports the comfort and safety of residents, visitors, and staff. These responsibilities align with the University’s custodial operations for Sunnyside Apartments.

Responsibilities
• Clean and disinfect lobbies, hallways, stairwells, elevators, and common areas.
• Sweep, mop, vacuum, and maintain floors.
• Clean restrooms and restock paper products and soap.
• Empty trash and recycling containers.
• Clean windows, glass doors, and entryways.
• Dust furniture, vents, handrails, and fixtures.
• Maintain laundry rooms and community centers.
• Clean offices, break rooms, and meeting rooms.
• Report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
• Assist with move-in and move-out cleaning.
• Follow University safety procedures and proper chemical handling.
• Operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, floor scrubbers, buffers, and carpet extractors.
• Assist with snow removal or emergency cleanup when needed.
• Work with floor machines, ladders, lift equipment, and chemicals on a daily basis.
• From time to time, a scissor lift will be used.
• Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Janitor, II: Requires at least 1 year of related experience.
Preferences
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Previous custodial or janitorial experience preferred.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb stairs, and perform physical work throughout the shift.
• Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• Must be fluent in the English language and be able to communicate both verbally and in writing in the English language.
