Sanctuary Recovery Centers is seeking a compassionate, dependable, and motivated Janitorial / Peer Support Specialist to join our growing behavioral health team. This unique position combines recovery support services with facility maintenance responsibilities to ensure our clients receive services in a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.

Utilizing lived recovery experience, this role provides encouragement, mentorship, and support to individuals receiving behavioral health and substance use treatment services while also helping maintain the cleanliness and organization of our treatment facilities. This position is based on the Peer Support Specialist role utilized by Sanctuary Recovery Centers.

The Janitorial / Peer Support Specialist promotes recovery, hope, wellness, and independence through peer-based support while assisting with the daily cleanliness, sanitation, and upkeep of Sanctuary Recovery Centers locations. The ideal candidate is passionate about helping others, takes pride in maintaining a professional environment, and understands the importance of creating a safe space for healing and recovery.

Essential Job Duties

Peer Support Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one peer support services using lived experience in recovery.
  • Encourage members to identify personal strengths, goals, and recovery objectives
  • Support members in building coping skills, self-advocacy, and independent living skills.
  • Promote recovery, resiliency, hope, and community integration.
  • Assist members in accessing community resources, social supports, employment resources, healthcare services, and housing opportunities.
  • Facilitate or assist with recovery-focused groups and activities.
  • Work collaboratively with clinical and support staff.
  • Complete required service documentation accurately and timely
  • Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.

Janitorial Responsibilities

  • Empty all trash and recycling receptacles throughout the office, treatment rooms, group rooms, lobby, and staff areas; replace liners as needed.
  • Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces, including door handles, light switches, reception counters, tabletops, chairs, and shared equipment.
  • Sweep, dust-mop, or vacuum all floors in common areas, hallways, offices, and group rooms.
  • Spot-mop spills and high-traffic areas as needed.
  • Complete regular bathroom sanitation throughout the day, multiple times per shift, including cleaning and disinfecting toilets, urinals, sinks, counters, fixtures, mirrors, partitions, floors, and bathroom trash areas.
  • Keep bathrooms fully stocked at all times with paper towels, toilet paper, hand soap, and hand sanitizer.
  • Clean and restock the break room/kitchenette, including wiping counters, cleaning the microwave and refrigerator exterior, emptying trash, and restocking paper products.
  • Wipe down windowsills, baseboards, and other accessible surfaces as needed.
  • Clean interior windows, interior glass doors, partition glass, display windows, window frames, tracks, and sills weekly or more often in high-traffic/reception areas.
  • Coordinate exterior window cleaning monthly or quarterly depending on building exposure and weather, scheduling exterior work for early morning or low-client-traffic times when possible.
  • Spot-clean fingerprints and smudges on glass daily as needed.
  • Complete daily floor care, including sweeping, dust-mopping, vacuuming, and damp-mopping hard floors in bathrooms, break rooms, and high-traffic zones.
  • Complete weekly full mopping of hard-surface floors with appropriate cleaner/disinfectant and vacuum edges and under furniture.
  • Assist with monthly or as-needed deep cleaning, including machine scrubbing hard floors and extracting or shampooing carpeted areas in group rooms and offices.
  • Support quarterly floor care, including stripping and refinishing hard floors if applicable or performing heavy carpet extraction.
  • Immediately address spills, tracked-in dirt, stains, and sanitation concerns to maintain a professional and hygienic appearance.
  • Dust furniture, desks, shelves, blinds, and light fixtures weekly or as needed.
  • Clean and disinfect treatment rooms and group rooms between sessions or at the end of the day, including tables, chairs, whiteboards, and shared materials.
  • Maintain exterior entry areas by sweeping sidewalks/entry mats, cleaning exterior doors and glass, and emptying outdoor ashtrays or trash if present.
  • Restock all cleaning and restroom supplies and notify the supervisor when inventory is low.
  • Report any maintenance issues, safety hazards, or supply shortages promptly.
  • Follow all infection-control, bloodborne pathogen, and chemical safety protocols, especially in a clinical/behavioral health setting.
  • Assist with facility setup and breakdown for meetings, groups, and events.
  • Maintain cleaning schedules and assigned facility checklists.
  • Secure the building at the end of shift if required, including locking doors, turning off lights, and setting the alarm if applicable.

Required Qualifications

  • Current Arizona Certified Peer Support Specialist (PSS) Certification.
  • Current Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card (Required).
  • Lived experience in recovery.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Arizona Driver's License.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification or ability to obtain within agency timelines.
  • Current TB Test or ability to obtain before employment.
  • Ability to pass all required pre-employment screening requirements.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and ethical standards.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical cleaning duties throughout the workday.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in behavioral health, substance use treatment, or recovery support services.
  • Janitorial, housekeeping, maintenance, or environmental services experience.
  • Knowledge of community resources and behavioral health systems.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.

  • Ability to perform routine cleaning and housekeeping tasks daily.
