ANNOUNCEMENT OF SERVICE VACANCY

POSITION: Itinerant Surge Classroom Special Education Instructional Aide/Autism Mentor

LOACTION: Lewis County High School

(This position is for Robert Bland Middle School SPED, currently located at Lewis County High School)

QUALIFICATIONS: As per State and County Regulations. Those presently employed or on the Aide Substitute List will be given preference. Applicant must possess a valid First Aid card and be certified in CPR. Applicants not already employed must take and pass the State Aide's Competency Test. Applicants must be Autism Mentor certified, or willing to obtain certification.

REQUIREMENTS

*Must be 18 years of age, or older

*High School diploma, or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5

*Criminal Background check pursuant to WV Code § 18-5-15c

  • Applicant must possess a valid First Aid card and be certified in CPR.

*Applicants not already employed must take and pass the State Aide's Competency Test

*Autism Mentor certification, or willing to obtain certification

*Possibility of riding a bus to assist with transportation to and from school and school related activities

Applicant must be trained or willing to be trained in the following:

  1. Autism Mentor
  2. Positive Behavioral Support
  3. Picture Exchange Communication System
  4. Visual Scheduling
  5. Autism Mentor certification or willing to obtain certification

FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  1. Under supervision of licensed teacher, prepare for classroom activities.
  2. Help the students to learn to care for their own personal belongings
  3. Assist the teacher with non-instructional classroom duties, on the playground, in the cafeteria, and while loading and unloading buses.
  4. Assist with recess and necessary "extra" trips.
  5. Handle routine interruptions and provide assistance on occasions when the teacher is unavoidably occupied elsewhere.
  6. Assist the teacher in the development of student self-discipline through reinforcement of positive behavior
  7. Assist during instructional times with activities such as drill work, reading, storytelling, small group functions, as well as assist students at individual station activities.
  8. Work with small groups of students to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.
  9. Evaluate the day's work with the teacher and make plans for the following day.
  10. Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and con-dentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teacher.
  11. Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations and Board policies.
  12. Assist the teacher in the use of all available computer hardware and software.
  13. Assist the students in the use of maintenance of all available computer hardware and software.
  14. Other duties as assigned.
  15. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  16. 1. This position will frequently require the employee to crawl, sit, stoop, reach, stand, walk, lift, pull, grasp, talk, hear, see and use repetitive motions.
  17. 2. This position may require lifting/moving at least 50 pounds (100 pounds vertically for Special Education and Transportation positions) of children, materials, etc.

SALARY:As provided in WV Code 18A-4-8 and 18A-4-8a

SCHEDULE: 7:30 AM – 3:00 PM (time could vary to accommodate student schedules)

TERM:200 Days (prorated)

AVAILABLE:2026-2027 School Year

For the 2026-2027 school year only (This is a "surge" position)
