Position Summary
The IT Systems Administrator is responsible for the reliable operation, maintenance, and security of technology systems. This role supports servers, network infrastructure, staff and students, and core software platforms used for teaching, learning, and school operations. The ideal candidate is a hands-on problem solver who understands the unique needs of a K-12 environment, including student safety, data privacy, and instructional continuity.
Responsibilities
Infrastructure & Systems
- Install, configure, maintain, and monitor on-premise and/or cloud-based servers
- Support network infrastructure, including switches wireless access points
- Assist with Firewall management and system security
- Manage system updates, patching, and backups
- Ensure high availability and performance of core systems used by students and staff
- Monitor system performance and address issues before they disrupt learning
- Maintain Data Closets
Software & Platform Administration
- Administer Google Workspace (Apps, Groups, Permissions, and Security Settings, etc.)
- Manage educational and administrative software applications such as JAMF, Apple School Manager, Blackbaud, etc.
- Manage Hardware related systems (VoIP Phones, Print Management Software, etc.)
- Coordinate software updates, licensing, and vendor relationships
- Assist with classroom technology and instructional tools as needed
Security & Compliance
- Implement and maintain cybersecurity best practices appropriate for a K-12 environment
- Assist with data privacy compliance (e.g., FERPA, COPPA, state regulations)
- Monitor systems for security issues and respond to incidents
Work Alongside Colleagues
- Provide tier-2/3 technical support for staff and students when escalated
- Collaborate with teachers and administrators to support instructional technology needs
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical users
- Assist with onboarding/offboarding of staff and students as needed
- Perform other duties as determined by the Director of Technology
Planning & Documentation
- Maintain accurate documentation of systems, configurations, and processes
- Participate in technology planning, upgrades, and refresh cycles
- Identify opportunities to improve reliability, efficiency, and security
Qualifications
Qualifications
Required
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience)
- At least 3 years of experience in IT systems administration or similar role
- Experience managing:
- - Servers (Primarily Windows)
- - Network infrastructure (switches, wireless)
- - Management platforms (JAMF or similar MDM, Google Admin Console)
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with a solutions-oriented approach
- Ability to work effectively in a school environment with students and staff
Preferred
- Experience in a K-12 or educational environment
- Knowledge of student data privacy and compliance requirements
- Experience with Virtualization Platforms
- Relevant certifications (e.g., CompTIA Network+, Google Workspace Admin, JAMF)
- Basic audio-visual knowledge
Working Conditions
- Occasional lifting of equipment (up to ~60 lbs)
- Some evening or weekend work may be required for maintenance or special events
- School-based environment with interaction with students
