Summary

The IT Intern – Applications & Software Development assists the Enterprise Applications team with supporting, maintaining, and enhancing software systems used throughout the City. This position provides students with practical experience in application support, software development, business process analysis, and municipal technology while working alongside Application Analysts and Software Developers.

The intern will assist with troubleshooting business applications, developing small utilities and automation tools, testing software enhancements, documenting systems, and supporting departmental technology initiatives.

Examples of duties

  • Provide first-level support for enterprise and departmental business applications.
  • Troubleshoot application issues and document findings for senior staff.
  • Assist in testing software updates, enhancements, and new application deployments.
  • Develop small applications, scripts, reports, and automation tools under supervision.
  • Write and maintain SQL queries, reports, and database documentation.
  • Assist with API integrations and data exchange between business systems.
  • Document business processes, application workflows, and technical procedures.
  • Participate in gathering user requirements for application improvements.
  • Assist in developing dashboards and reports using business intelligence tools.
  • Help maintain application security roles and user permissions.
  • Participate in software implementation projects and user acceptance testing.
  • Research emerging technologies and recommend solutions to improve City operations.
  • Perform data validation, cleanup, and migration activities.
  • Provide excellent customer service to City departments.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Current enrollment in an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in:

  • Computer Science;
  • Management Information Systems;
  • Software Engineering;
  • Information Technology;
  • Computer Engineering;
  • or a closely related field.
  • Completion of introductory programming coursework preferred.;
  • Valid Texas driver's license preferred.
