The SCSM is the largest museum in South Carolina, stewarding over 1.1 million objects and specimens and welcoming 5 million+ visitors over its 37-year history. The museum has embarked on a renovation of 150,000 square feet of its exhibition, programmatic and collection storage spaces occupying four floors of a historic 1890s textile mill on the National Register of Historic Places. The SCSM is seeking an IT Customer Support Specialist. This position serves as the primary front-line technical support resource for staff and operations at the South Carolina State Museum. Responsibilities include:

  • Receiving and documenting technical support requests through phone, email, ticketing system, or in person.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving issues involving workstations, mobile devices, peripherals, software applications, and basic network connectivity.
  • Assisting with account creation, access permissions, password resets, and onboarding tasks.
  • Performing routine maintenance, software updates, and workstation configuration.
  • Escalating more complex or unresolved issues to higher-level support teams.
  • Tracking and documenting all work in the museum’s service management system.
  • Supporting IT projects, technology deployments, exhibit technology needs, and user trainings.
  • Developing or updating knowledge base articles, FAQs, and user guides.

Examples of duties

  • A bachelor's degree in information technology systems or other related field of study or associate’s degree and experience in the information technology field; relevant experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must be able to work some nights and weekends
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must regularly move about museum assisting customers
  • Must be able to ascend/descend stairs and ladders
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl
  • Must be able to work in tight spaces

Qualifications

  • Experience in a help desk or IT support environment.
  • Knowledge of Windows operating systems, Microsoft 365, and common business applications.
  • Familiarity with IT service management systems and workflows.
  • Industry certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, or equivalent.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and customer service skills.
  • Experience supporting specialized environments such as museum exhibit technology is a plus.
