The Interventional Radiology (IR) Hybrid Medical Assistant and Assistant Scrub Tech play vital roles in pre-operative and post-operative patient care within the holding area. Additionally, they support the lead Scrub Tech by providing first surgical assistance during interventional procedures (see procedure list below) when needed.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Sterile Preparation

  • Prepare access sites for procedures, including femoral, jugular, and radial access, as well as abdominal procedures and biopsies.

  • Set up and maintain sterile fields and ensure all medical instruments and devices are ready for use.

Procedure Assistance

  • Manage sharps, wires, catheters, and ancillary devices during procedures.

  • Assist in loading catheters and wires and provide support during arterial closure.

  • Operate angiography and ultrasound equipment, including positioning, troubleshooting, and entering patient demographics.

Post-Procedure Duties

  • Transport patients between the holding area and the operative suite.

  • Clean the procedure room and equipment after each procedure.

  • Dispose of hazardous waste per OSHA standards.

  • Maintain the cleanliness and safety of all areas.

Imaging & Radiation Safety

  • Ensure proper transfer of images and data to PACS and verify daily image transfers.

  • Follow ALARA principles for radiation safety and document radiation dose and fluoroscopy time.

  • Maintain cleanliness of lead protective equipment and monitor radiation badge usage.

Inventory & Equipment Management:

  • Unpack, organize, and restock medical devices and supplies.

  • Utilize Spacetrax inventory management software to maintain stock levels.

  • Inspect equipment before and after procedures and recommend repairs or replacements as needed.

Medication & Pathology Coordination

  • Draw up and label intravenous medications following sterile field competency policies.

  • Coordinate biopsy pickups with Pathology and complete necessary documentation.

  • Reconcile medications and perform pre-operative calls to explain instructions.

  • Send post-op prescriptions to the patient's pharmacy before the procedure.

Patient Care & Monitoring

  • Conduct pre-operative evaluations, start IVs, and complete screening questionnaires.

  • Monitor patients pre- and post-procedure, documenting vitals and notifying the nurse of any changes.

  • Assess and manage groin sites to prevent bleeding or hematoma formation.

  • Hold pressure on arterial sites if needed.

  • Discharge patients, review discharge instructions, and answer any questions.

Sedation Transfer & Post-Op Monitoring

  • Document patient transfers from the procedure room to the recovery bay.

  • Communicate with patient families regarding procedure status and pickup times.

  • Arrange transport if needed and assist with patient discharge.

General Support

  • Assist with patient chart preparation, scheduling, and phone calls as needed.

  • Restock linens and monitor hazardous materials disposal.

  • Help set up and turn over procedure rooms between cases.

Qualifications

  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED required.

  • Completion of a Medical Assistant program or one year of Medical Assistant experience in a medical clinic is preferred.

  • 1 - 2 years of customer service preferred.

  • Minimum 1- 2 years of front office experience in a medical setting preferred.

  • Associate Degree in medical field preferred.

  • Outstanding judgment, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail.

  • Flexibility, problem-solving, and team attitude.

  • Proficient with computer software, Microsoft Office Suite, database, and typing skills.

  • Must demonstrate a caring, compassionate, and patient-first attitude.

  • Maintain HIPAA compliance.

  • Must have the ability & willingness to travel to other sites as necessary within a geographic region.

Physical Requirements for the Job

  • Regularly required to sit and stand for extended periods

  • Involves standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, and twisting.

  • Requires full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.

  • May be required to help to transfer the patient.

  • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 lbs.
