Job Description

The Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering (IOE) at the University of Michigan (U-M) welcomes applications for a faculty position at mid-career or higher rank (associate, and full professor) in the area of Sports Analytics (SA) for an appointment beginning in September 2026. Note that an assistant professor with an exceptional track record may be considered. SA represents an expansive field that connects disciplines within and beyond the college of engineering in the shared pursuit of understanding performance, decision-making, and human movement. This is part of a campus-wide faculty expansion program directed towards building a campus-wide cluster focused on SA. The new cluster is expected to leverage and augment IOE’s enduring strengths in optimization, stochastics, data analytics, machine learning, and human factors. Our multidisciplinary department integrates theoretical, methodological, and applied research interests. We are seeking individuals who are dedicated to excellence in both graduate and undergraduate education, capable of establishing independent, externally-funded research programs in their fields of expertise, and who embrace the global outlook, leadership focus, and service commitment that are fundamental to the culture of Michigan Engineering.Particular emphasis will be placed on senior candidates who have an established record in the field and can build an impactful and expansive research program in SA.

Qualifications

You have a Ph.D. and show a commitment to high-quality research and evidence of teaching success and/or potential, as appropriate. You are dedicated to excellence in graduate and undergraduate education and will develop impactful, productive, and innovative research programs.

We welcome candidates at a mid-career or higher level (tenure-track Associate Professor, and Full Professor) from all areas related to Industrial and Operations Engineering, including Operations Research, Data and Decision Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Human Factors, and related disciplines. Assistant professors with an established stellar track record may be considered. Our department’s application areas include energy & sustainability, health & human safety, manufacturing, mobility & transportation, operations management, public policy, and robotics.
