Employment Type:Full Time – Permanent

Salary Range:T3, Level 5, $102,000 - $120,000 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity. This position may be eligible to receive a Northern Living allowance. Northern Living allowances are provided based on the location of the position and where an employee primarily works and resides

The Opportunity­­

The Alberta Energy Regulator(AER)is seeking anInvestigator to jointheMajor InvestigationsteamWe arelooking forsomeone who is skilled inplanning, evidence gathering, and briefingto complete complex investigationsrelating to Alberta’ energy development.At the AER, our investigators are responsible for investigating breaches of energy and environmental legislationto uphold the enforcement backstop. This team is responsible for telling the full story to allow for fair and unbiased decision making.

Working in this dynamic field requires well-developed problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically.Clear, concise communicationin presentations and in written reports is an important skill.The successful candidate must be able to adapt to change quickly and assess for new challenges and opportunities Our success is due to the varied experiences and backgrounds of our team membersOur new investigator will have experience in investigating complex, time sensitive, andconsequential contraventions.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Triagewhat to investigate by reviewingsubmittedinspection and audit findings todetermineif an investigation iswarranted

  • Develop investigation plans that guide you and your team members through the process to ensuretime management anda successful outcome

  • Gather evidence though information requests, witness interviews, photography, securing physical evidence, researching historical records, andutilizinginformation technology

  • Utilize critical thinking skills to analyze vast amounts of information and data to discover potential leads, substantiate theories andultimately proveyour case.

  • Write investigation reports that evaluate and summarise the evidence to enable unbiased and impartial enforcement decisions

  • Be the subject matter expert to provide guidance andadviceto AER staff on matters concerning the investigation processes, techniques and the collection and preservation of evidence.

Whatwe’relooking for in you:

  • A bachelor’s degree in the fieldsofregulatoryoperations,lawenforcementorresource management

  • Aminimum of 5 years of progressive experience relating to regulatory compliance and enforcementInvestigation experienceshould include planning,evidence gatheringand analysis, and report writing

  • Ability to compile and analyze technical details and apply critical thinking skills toovercomeobstacles and challenges that are presented during an investigation.

  • A team player who is effective at collaborating with others and is willing to proactively seek advice and respectfully provide their opinion

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and writing,todocument and presentinvestigation findings

Additional Information:

  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.

  • Pre-placementmedicalanda fully valid class 5 driver’s license along with a positive driving recordisrequired

  • This position will be subject to pre-employment background screening, including a criminal record check.

  • This position requires appointment as a Peace Officer in Alberta.

  • Additionaltraining is required and will be provided: First Aid, H2S Alive, Driver Training

  • Occasional overnight travel to different AER office and field locations in Alberta.

  • This role will be approximately 90% office work and 10% field work.

  • Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.
