Reporting to the Nurse Manager, the Intraoperative Neurophysiological (IONM) Technician is responsible for providing real-time neurophysiological monitoring during surgical procedures to support optimal patient outcomes. Working closely with surgeons, neurophysiologist and anesthesiologists, the technician performs and interprets neurodiagnostic tests to help identify and prevent neurological injury during surgery.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform a comprehensive range of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) modalities to assess and preserve the functional and structural integrity of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nervous system in real time throughout surgical procedures. Modalities include, but are not limited to:
• Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEPs)
• Motor Evoked Potentials (MEPs)
• Electromyography (EMG – free-run and triggered)
• F-waves and H-reflexes
• Direct spinal cord mapping
• Analyze, interpret, and communicate neurophysiological data in real time, particularly during critical phases of surgery, to support clinical decision-making and optimize patient safety.
• Prepare and apply electrodes, stimulators, and related equipment prior to surgery in accordance with established infection prevention and control standards and operating room protocols.
• Ensure all monitoring equipment is properly calibrated, functional, and safe for use by conducting routine and urgent testing, troubleshooting technical issues, and coordinating repairs with biomedical engineering as required.
• Maintain accurate, detailed, and timely documentation of all intraoperative procedures, including written and electronic reports, ensuring completeness, clarity, and compliance with regulatory and organizational standards.
• Manage patient data entry and maintain neurophysiological records databases to ensure reports are submitted promptly and remain organized, accessible, and audit-ready.
• Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing staff, and other perioperative team members to support an integrated, patient-centered approach to care, while advocating for patient safety in a professional and diplomatic manner.
• Engage in ongoing professional development through self-directed learning, continuing education, and active participation in advancing clinical best practices in intraoperative neurophysiology.
• Contribute to knowledge translation, education, and mentorship by sharing expertise and promoting best practices within the organization and the broader clinical community.
• Perform additional cross-functional duties and responsibilities as required, consistent with the scope and evolving needs of the role.

Qualifications & Experience

• A bachelor’s degree in Neurophysiology, Biomedical Engineering Technology, or a related health science discipline.
• Completion of an accredited IONM training program preferred.
• Certification in Neurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring (CNIM-ABRET)

• Membership with Canadian Association of Neurophysiological Monitoring (CANM) preferred

• Minimum 2 years of experience in intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring or clinical neurophysiology.
• Strong knowledge of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and surgical procedures (e.g., spine, brain, ENT).
• Proficient with Microsoft Applications

Working Conditions

• Work is primarily performed in operating rooms.
• May require extended periods of standing and concentration.
• On-call, evening, or weekend shifts may be required depending on surgical schedules.
