The Position

Biostatistics and Data Sciences (BDS) is a global organization with more than 350 employees within the Human Pharma Business Unit. Working in close collaboration with other functions at Boehringer Ingelheim and external vendors we combine methodological and technical data science skills with business and scientific expertise to drive smart, timely and confident decision making across drug development, approval, and access. In this internship, you will contribute to holistic evidence generation in late‑stage clinical development by engaging in innovations in statistical methodology, applying these methods to concrete clinical use cases, or shaping end‑to‑end analytical solutions that enable fast, impactful, and informed decision‑making.

You will gain an insight into the following topics and areas of activities:

Depending on the focus of your internship, you will work with and implement state‑of‑the‑art and innovative approaches related to statistical methodology and their application in modern clinical development. This includes areas such as study design, data transformation, data analysis, visualization, and statistical programming.

Your internship tasks may include:

• Conduct research and literature reviews to gain a solid overview of relevant statistical methods and clinical study design concepts, establishing the foundation for subsequent methodological and analytical work.
• Develop and/or adapt innovative statistical methods for use in clinical trials; this may include theoretical development, implementation, and testing, under the guidance of experienced statisticians.
• Simulate data to evaluate the performance and properties of new or existing statistical methods.
• Apply established and innovative data science techniques to real clinical trial data, interpreting results and generating insights for decision‑making.
• Ideation and implementation of data transformation and analysis workflows, to support method uptake, automation, and reporting in a regulated environment.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to analyze, interpret, and communicate findings from clinical development programs.

Your Profile:

• Minimum 4 semester of studies in (Bio‑) Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, or related quantitative fields, with a solid foundational understanding relevant to your chosen internship focus (methodology, applications, or statistical implementation).
• Good knowledge of statistical methodology or other fields relevant to your specialization, combined with at least a basic understanding of clinical study design, medical terminology, and the general context of clinical development.
• Initial hands‑on experience with relevant programming tools, such as R or SAS, and a willingness to apply them to methodological research, data analysis, workflow development, or clinical applications.
• Strong analytical and solution-oriented skills, paired with enthusiasm and motivation to work on applied questions in clinical development.
• Fluency in written and spoken English

• As a student intern, you can expect a fair expense allowance (payment of the currently valid minimum wage)
• You will be given 2.5 days of paid time off for every full month of the internship
• A full-time internship is 37.5 hours a week (a smaller number of hours can be arranged
