Job Description

Do you love working directly with students and helping them take their first steps into a career? Are you energized by relationship-building, hands-on advising, and the work of connecting students to opportunity?

The University of Southern Maine (USM) is seeking an Internship Program Coordinator to join the Career & Employment Hub and play a central role in the Career Exploration Internship Program (CEIP) — a program that supports meaningful internship experiences for USM students and strengthens partnerships with employers across southern Maine.

This is a student-facing role at its core. You'll guide students through the application and interview process, run orientations, support them throughout their internship experience, and connect them to the broader resources of the Career & Employment Hub helping to build pathways to opportunity for USM's diverse student body.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Lead the application, interview, and selection process for each internship cycle — guiding students in building resumes, cover letters, and interviewing skills.
  • Develop and carry out student recruitment strategies, including tabling, outreach, and presentations for student groups and organizations, with a strong emphasis on equitable access for USM's diverse student body.
  • Run internship orientation for each new cohort, with a focus on professional skill development and networking.
  • Provide direct support to current interns — monitoring Brightspace, tracking assignments, sending reminders, and checking in individually with students.
  • Empower students to discover their strengths by connecting them with Career Advisors, the Job Shadow Program, Peer Career Guides, and other Hub resources.
  • Maintain ongoing employer relations and support internship supervisors throughout the internship experience.
  • Collaborate with the Peer Career Guide Program to support senior Career Advisor classroom presentations.
  • Ensure day-to-day administrative requirements are completed on time and in compliance with program procedures; liaise with the Student Employment office as needed.

The Career & Employment Hub supports students and alumni in exploring career pathways, gaining professional experience, and successfully transitioning into the workforce. Through individualized advising, employer partnerships, internship coordination, networking events, and skill-building workshops, the Hub provides comprehensive career development services grounded in USM’s Service Promise of being Student Focused Every Day. The team works collaboratively across campus and with community and industry partners to create meaningful experiential learning opportunities that prepare students for lifelong career success.

This is an in-person position located on our Portland Campus with a starting salary of $45,000. It is a regular, full-time position with occasional nights and weekends as required by program activities and events.

About University of Maine System (UMS)

The University of Maine System (UMS) is the state’s largest driver of educational attainment and economic development. In the past two decades, the System has awarded 106,362 degrees and spurred and strengthened thousands of small Maine businesses through world-class research and development.

Established in 1968, UMS unites the state’s distinctive public universities including the R1 University of Maine and its regional campus the University of Maine at Machias, the University of Maine at Augusta, the University of Maine at Farmington, the University of Maine at Fort Kent, the University of Maine at Presque Isle, the University of Southern Maine and the University of Maine School of Law, as well as the University of Maine Graduate and Professional Center.

The System serves more than 30,000 students annually and its tripartite education, research and service mission is made possible by the efforts of some 5,000 faculty and staff. Despite demographic declines in the state and region, over the last five years the System has increased the number of high school students annually earning free university credit by 32%, rapidly expanded high-quality online education, grown graduate enrollment by 22%, and launched innovative adult degree completion initiatives to advance economic mobility and meet state workforce needs. Maine’s public universities continue to be a national leader in advancing college affordability and access and reducing student debt. Listed in-state tuition and fees at UMaine are the lowest of any New England flagship and Pell-eligible Maine students can attend four of the System’s small universities without paying out-of-pocket for tuition and fees.
