Job Description

At Roche you can show up as yourself, embraced for the unique qualities you bring. Our culture encourages personal expression, open dialogue, and genuine connections, where you are valued, accepted and respected for who you are, allowing you to thrive both personally and professionally. This is how we aim to prevent, stop and cure diseases and ensure everyone has access to healthcare today and for generations to come. Join Roche, where every voice matters.

The Position

As an Intern in the Imaging Data Insights pRED group, which is part of the Computational Sciences Center of Excellence, you will focus on advancing our understanding of retinal diseases and their response to treatment to support Roche’s Ophthalmology pipeline and strategy.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an imaging modality that allows us to acquire three-dimensional, micrometer-resolution scans of the retina in seconds, however only single slices are typically evaluated manually by clinicians to assess the presence of various pathological features. This leaves a critical gap in the understanding of disease progression and treatment response.

To bridge this gap and communicate drug impact effectively, you will build 4D (3D + time) visualizations for OCT scans and corresponding segmentations acquired daily by patients at home which will reveal short-term pathology dynamics missed by standard imaging. You will be working with an expert mentor while gaining profound proficiency in medical imaging.

The Opportunity

  • Design, build, and interpret 4D (3D+time) visualizations to reveal short-term retinal pathology dynamics using daily Home OCT data and corresponding segmentations.
  • Gain deep proficiency in medical imaging processing and analysis.
  • Translate complex, high-dimensional data into intuitive visual stories to effectively communicate drug impact to both clinicians and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with clinical teams and other stakeholders to develop and evaluate analysis techniques and applications.
  • Prepare scientific communication content (presentations and reports) to share the results of the project with a wider community.

Who You Are

  • Enrollment in a relevant Bachelor’s or Master’s program at the time of the internship
  • Knowledge in computer graphics (e.g. volume rendering, isosurface, etc. ) and image processing (e.g. image registration)
  • Strong proficiency in Python and practical experience with 3D visualization libraries (VTK, PyVista, VisPy, or Blender scripting, or similar) and tools (e.g., Paraview, Slicer, Meshlab, IMARIS or similar)
  • Ability to confidently work with volumetric data (voxel processing)
  • Demonstrated curiosity and drive to learn and innovate, with the ability to take initiative and suggest new ideas
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex scientific ideas towards non-technical stakeholders
  • Fluent in English (both written and spoken)

Additional experience and competencies preferred:

  • Familiarity with GPU computing (CUDA/OpenCL)
  • Experience in programmatic video generation/animation (e.g., ffmpeg, imageio, or matplotlib.animation) to support the project's aim of "time course visualisation"
  • Previous experience in the Ophthalmology field or general medical imaging in academia or industry

Additional Information:

  • The preferred start date for the internship is in June 2026, with a duration of 6 months.
  • This position is based in Basel, Switzerland.
  • The role requires a commitment to full-time employment.
  • Thesis writing is not included in the internship, it focuses on practical experience
  • Please upload your CV and a motivation letter. Please clearly indicate your preferred starting date and availability in your motivation letter.
  • For applicants from outside the EU/EFTA without a residence permit: a mandatory letter from the university is required, including duration, and a valid enrollment certificate.
