Job Description

Based in Newport, NC, NV5 Hydrospatial specializes in coastal shoreline and offshore bathymetric and geophysical surveying. The strength and continuing goal of NV5 is to provide our clients with the highest level of data quality and scientific integrity in a format that is easily applicable to both real-life management scenarios and research-oriented goals.

We are seeking motivated individuals to join our team as Hydrographic Survey Technician Interns for the Spring/Summer 2026 season This is a paid, hands-on opportunity designed for students or early-career professionals looking to gain real-world experience in coastal mapping and hydrographic survey. Interns will work alongside experienced hydrographers, assisting with data acquisition, processing, and field operations in dynamic coastal and nearshore environments. In this internship, you’ll gain practical experience with hydrographic survey equipment and build a strong foundation in the principles of survey.

Work Setting:

  • Location: This position is remote
  • Schedule: Ability to work 12-hour field days, occasional weekends, and travel frequently to project locations for up to 3 weeks
  • Travel up to 50% of the time

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the collection of hydrographic and geophysical data using multibeam, singlebeam, sidescan, and other sonar systems, including Kongsberg EM2040/2042, Norbit WINGHEAD, and Edgetech
  • Assist with the operation of precise positioning systems such as RTK-GPS, VRS, and DGPS
  • Assist with basic calibration, integration, maintenance and repair of various survey systems & platforms
  • Help operate and maintain survey vessels and all-terrain vehicles
  • Adhere to SMS guidelines during all survey, vessel, and equipment operations to ensure a safe working environment
  • Ensure data integrity by learning stringent QC methods and skills for acquisition and data processing, perform routine equipment checks and maintain detailed survey logs

Qualifications

Education / Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a BA, BS, or AAS degree in hydrography, coastal geology, geomatics, or a related field
  • Currently standing as a college Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or Graduate Student
  • Experience and comfortability working on 20 – 75 ft boats in nearshore and coastal environments.
  • Experience with acoustic data acquisition systems (singlebeam, multibeam, sidescan) is preferred but not required.
  • Computer literacy including basic file organization and data management practices.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, self-manage and problem solve.
  • Ability to work 12-hour field days, occasional weekends, and travel frequently to project locations for up to 3 weeks.
  • Physical ability to lift objects over 50lbs.
  • A commitment to details and an enthusiastic attitude.
  • Ability to work independently, troubleshoot, and contribute to a positive team environment.

Certifications / Licenses:

  • Small vessel operation experience (with or without USCG licensing) preferred but not required.
  • A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check and drug screening.
