GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The State Office of Risk Management (SORM) is seeking a Workers’ Compensation & Risk Management Training Consultant to serve as a subject matter expert on all aspects of workers’ compensation. This person brings deep expertise in Texas workers’ compensation claims administration and collaborates with the training team to identify training needs, provide technical content guidance, and delivers training related to both workers’ compensation and risk management. This role will support training initiatives for internal staff, external client agencies, workers’ compensation claims adjusters, and other industry professionals.


Work involves serving as the primary subject matter expert for workers’ compensation training content; delivering instructor-led, virtual, video, and self-paced training on workers compensation and risk management topics; consulting on curricula and course content to ensure technical accuracy; facilitating meetings and professional development sessions; creating communication materials such as presentations, articles, and web content; assisting with video scripts and delivering training on camera; and speaking at seminars and other engagements. This person works closely with the Training Consultants Team Lead and reports to the Director of Human Resources.


ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS
Subject Matter Expertise & Training Delivery

  • Serves as the subject matter expert on Texas workers’ compensation law, claims administration, indemnity benefits, and industry best practices
  • Delivers Risk Management, Workers’ Compensation, and insurance training for internal and external customers through multiple modalities including classroom, video, virtual, and e-learning platforms
  • Delivers risk management training to external client agencies to enhance their risk management programs and workplace safety practices
  • Plans, designs, and analyzes workers’ compensation and risk management training for internal and external customers in collaboration with the Training Consultant Team Lead
  • Speaks at seminars, professional engagements, and on-camera instructional content


Content Support & Collaboration

  • Collaborates with the training team and Training Consultant Team Lead to ensure technical accuracy and relevance of workers’ compensation and risk management training content
  • Collaborates with internal and external subject matter experts as needed to develop, update, and enhance training content across program areas
  • Provides subject matter guidance on curricula, course outlines, training aids, manuals, and other materials to ensure consistency with agency standards and brand identity
  • Assists with content development for modern and virtual learning experiences, including the Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Analyzes injury and loss data to inform training content and identify emerging trends
  • Assists in formulating policies and procedures to carry out the training program

Relationships & Customer Service

  • Anticipates customer needs and facilitates appropriate solutions; develops and maintains effective working relationships with internal and external customers
  • Assists in solving training problems and ensuring effective utilization of modern training methods and techniques; promotes teamwork and models team behavior
  • Coordinates training presentations and provides training or technical assistance to other state agencies

  • Works 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday; works overtime as needed
  • Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 50%

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Experience: Five years’ full-time experience adjusting workers’ compensation claims.
  • Licensure: Active and current license to adjust Workers’ Compensation claims in Texas (verified pre-employment).
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, pharmacology, and generally accepted medical procedures
  • Knowledge and experience handling indemnity benefits including TIBs, IIBs, SIBs, LIBs, and DIBs
  • Knowledge of Division of Workers’ Compensation law, claims administration, and appeals process
  • Knowledge and application of the Official Disability Guidelines (ODG) in the claims process
  • Skill in communicating complex risk management and claims-related concepts to an audience of varied experience
  • Skill in working under pressure and meeting deadlines
  • Skill in working effectively with a diverse clientele
  • Skill in communicating complex risk management and claims-related concepts to audiences of varied experience
  • Effective oral and written communication skills (Writing sample and training presentation required at time of application and administered at time of interview)
  • Skill using a computer for word processing and data entry/retrieval
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and effective decision making
  • Ability to receive and positively respond to constructive feedback
  • Ability to work with others in a collegial office environment
  • Ability to handle stressful situations
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to work 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in business administration, education/training, risk management, or closely related field
  • Experience in training, education, or organizing/conducting workshops
  • Experience with virtual platforms such as Zoom, Teams, or comparable platforms
  • Certification in risk control management, safety management, or risk management
  • Knowledge of training procedures and techniques of adulating learning theory, principles and techniques; and of group processes, group dynamics, and interpersonal relations
  • Knowledge of state and federal rules and regulations regarding risk management and safety
  • Demonstrated proficiency in developing online training modules with applicable software
  • Skill in public speaking
  • Skill in speaking, instructing, and/or presenting on camera
