About the company

Founded in 1995, Vulcan is Australasia’s highest performing metals distributor and processor, delivering solutions that enable excellence. With 66 sites and ~1300 employees across New Zealand and Australia, our sustained growth can be attributed to our superior service and dedication to continuous improvement across every facet of our business – and this always starts with people.

About the Role

This is a customer-focused internal sales role and a great opportunity to build a career in sales and distribution. As part of a small, close-knit Southland team, you'll be a key point of contact for our customers — helping them with enquiries, quotes, and orders, and making sure they receive reliable, friendly service every time.

You'll work closely with the wider branch and the sales team to keep things running smoothly. This is a growth role, so there's plenty of scope to develop and take on more over time.

Hours of work: Monday to Friday, 7:30am – 5:00pm. Enjoy your weekends.

What You'll Do

  • Support customers over the phone, by email, and in person
  • Prepare quotes and process orders accurately
  • Follow up with customers to make sure they're looked after
  • Build strong, lasting relationships with customers
  • Support the sales team and the day-to-day running of the branch
  • Keep customer and order information accurate and up to date
  • Follow safe work practices and look out for your team

Requirements

  • Experience in internal sales, trade sales, customer service, or a similar phone/office-based role
  • Good communication skills and a genuine, customer-first attitude
  • Well organised, reliable, and happy to help where needed
  • Comfortable using computers and picking up new systems
  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic
  • Experience with building products, aluminium, or steel products will be an advantage
  • Currently residing in NZ or holding a valid work visa
  • Willing to complete a pre-employment medical and drug screen

Benefits

  • Permanent role with guaranteed hours
  • Supportive team and great workplace culture
  • Health and wellness programme
  • Flat structure and approachable leaders
  • Enhanced parental leave
  • Long-term stability with a growing, market-leading business

About Vulcan

Since Vulcan's doors first opened in 1995, Vulcan Steel has been on a mission to shake up the steel and metal industry. Our goal? To be the go-to metals distributor for customers across Australia and New Zealand, offering the best service and top-notch products.

Vulcan has broadened its product offerings to include a diverse range of steel and metal products, from carbon steel to stainless steel, and everything in between, such as plate processing, coil processing, engineering steels, and aluminium. Our unwavering commitment to reliable service has driven our growth both organically and through the acquisition of well-established businesses. With over 70 branches throughout Australia and New Zealand and 1400+ employees across six business divisions, we are a leading force in the industry. Our extensive product range is used in every aspect of the economy, from the tiniest components in high-tech applications to large infrastructure and building projects.

Customer satisfaction is at the forefront of our priorities, and this is reflected in our consistently high Delivery in Full on Time (DIFOT) score in the high 90s. Our inventory levels are meticulously managed to ensure our customers always have access to the products they need. Our employees are empowered to make quick decisions in response to customer needs, and our transportation fleet, and quality products with traceability are just a few reasons why our customers trust us.

We have a unique non-hierarchical, single-status culture where everyone is encouraged and empowered to make their own decisions. This is a rare point of difference within our industry and a cultural foundation we're proud to maintain as we continue to grow. This flat structure keeps our business agile, efficient and extremely responsive and promotes a culture where all employees feel trusted, valued and fulfilled.

In 2022, Vulcan Steel took its place on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) and the New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX).
