The SC Public Employee Benefit Authority (PEBA) is the administrator and co-trustee of retirement and insurance programs for over half a million active and retired public employees of the State of South Carolina and their dependents.

Under general supervision, this position audits employee insurance and retirement benefits for state entities to promote compliance in the administration of the benefits.

Job duties include:

  • Conducts audits of state employee insurance and retirement records to ensure employers are in compliance with policies and procedures regarding PEBA's benefits. Performs reviews of employer enrollment and payroll records, conducts exit interviews, prepares working papers and writes audit reports stating findings, conclusions and recommendations for improvement for employer management. Assists Audits Manager in revising the employer audit program as benefits change or new information is revealed during audits.
  • Shares audit reports, forms and information gained from auditing PEBA employers with SCRS Enrollment and Employer Reporting and Financial Services' Operations and Accounting to ensure compliance of employers.
  • Assists in establishing the automation of comparing the employer payroll to the insurance enrollment system to reconcile the monthly premiums for audit purposes.
  • Assists the Audits Manager and/or the Information Management Manager with special projects or other tasks as requested.

Examples of duties

A bachelor's degree and professional experience in accounting, finance, insurance or retirement.

Knowledge of the practice, principles and theories of accounting and auditing. Knowledge of management practices and principles. Knowledge of Microsoft Office software. Ability to assist with planning, organizing, scheduling and directing comprehensive audit projects. Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
