The Internal Medicine Veterinary Technician is responsible for providing exceptional nursing care and technical support to patients within the Internal Medicine service. This position works collaboratively with veterinarians and other departments to deliver compassionate, high-quality specialty care while supporting diagnostic procedures, anesthesia, client communication, and patient treatment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Patient Care

Provide exceptional nursing care to hospitalized patients.

Obtain complete patient histories and maintain accurate medical records in ezyVetSmartflow

Perform comprehensive patient assessments and promptly communicate changes in patient condition to the attending veterinarian.

Monitor hospitalized patients and accurately document patient progress throughout hospitalization.

Administer medications, treatments, fluid therapy, CRIs (Continuous Rate Infusions), oxygen therapy, and blood products as prescribed.

Place, maintain, and troubleshoot intravenous catheters, urinary catheters, feeding tubes, central lines, and other specialized patient support devices.

Provide nutritional support, including syringe feeding and feeding tube management.

Utilize Fear Free handling techniques whenever appropriate to minimize patient stress while maintaining patient and staff safety.

Diagnostic & Laboratory Procedures

Perform venipuncture and collect blood, urine, fecal, cytology, endocrine, infectious disease, and other diagnostic samples.

Perform in-house laboratory testing while ensuring proper sample handling, storage, and quality control procedures.

Prepare and submit samples to outside reference laboratories.

Perform diagnostic imaging as directed.

Perform ECGs, blood pressure monitoring, serial laboratory evaluations, and other patient monitoring procedures.

Assist with advanced diagnostic procedures including bone marrow aspirates, liver aspirates, lymph node aspirates, abdominocentesis, thoracocentesis, and other minimally invasive procedures as directed.

Anesthesia & Specialty Procedures

Prepare patients for ultrasound, advanced imaging, endoscopy, anesthesia, and other specialty procedures.

Induce, monitor, and recover patients from anesthesia while monitoring ECG, blood pressure, SpO₂, ETCO₂, temperature, pulse, and respiration.

Assist with upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, bronchoscopy, rhinoscopy, cystoscopy, foreign body retrieval, and other Internal Medicine procedures.

Prepare, clean, disinfect, test, and maintain endoscopy equipment and specialty instrumentation according to hospital protocols.

Maintain procedure logs and ensure specialty equipment remains clean and operational.

Pharmacy & Medication Management

Calculate medication dosages and prepare medications as prescribed.

Maintain controlled substance documentation in accordance with hospital policies and regulatory requirements.

Maintain pharmacy inventory by stocking, rotating, and monitoring medication expiration dates.

Client Communication

Educate clients regarding chronic disease management, including diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, liver disease, gastrointestinal disease, endocrine disorders, and immune-mediated diseases.

Review medication administration techniques, home care instructions, and feeding tube management with clients.

Provide admission and discharge instructions, follow-up communication, and client education as directed by the veterinarian.

Communicate laboratory results and treatment recommendations as directed.

Coordinate recheck appointments and ongoing treatment plans.

Department Coordination

Coordinate patient care with Emergency, Radiology, Surgery, Oncology, ICU, Neurology, Cardiology, and other specialty services.

Facilitate patient transfers between departments.

Collaborate with Radiology to coordinate ultrasound and advanced imaging procedures.

Assist with scheduling advanced diagnostics and specialty procedures.

Anticipate the needs of the Internal Medicine clinician during examinations and procedures.

Medical Records & Documentation

Maintain complete, accurate, and timely electronic medical records in ezyVet

Ensure treatment sheets and medical records are updated in real time.

Prepare referral summaries and assist with medical record transfers when appropriate.

Equipment & Inventory

Maintain treatment areas in a clean, organized, and safe manner.

Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot specialty equipment including endoscopes, fluid pumps, syringe pumps, feeding pumps, ECG monitors, blood pressure monitors, infusion pumps, and patient monitoring equipment.

Report equipment malfunctions promptly and assist with routine maintenance.

Maintain adequate inventory levels of medical supplies and equipment.

Professionalism & Teamwork:

Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, integrity, and compassion in all interactions.

Collaborate effectively with doctors, technicians, assistants, client service representatives, and other hospital team members.

Mentor and assist with training new technicians and assistants.

Participate in continuing education, departmental meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and hospital training programs.

Assist with the development, implementation, and maintenance of departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Demonstrate proficiency with ezyVet and Internal Medicine workflows while supporting PETS Referral Center's commitment to exceptional patient care and client service.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) preferred.

Minimum two years of veterinary technician experience; specialty experience preferred.

Strong communication, customer service, and computer skills.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, reach, and perform repetitive hand movements throughout the workday.

Manual dexterity and visual acuity sufficient to safely perform veterinary technical procedures and operate medical equipment.

Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds independently and assist with lifting heavier patients or equipment as needed.

Ability to work safely in a fast-paced veterinary environment while performing the essential duties of the position.

Work Environment:

This position is performed in a fast-paced veterinary specialty and emergency hospital. Employees may be exposed to animal-related hazards, including bites, scratches, infectious diseases, blood and bodily fluids, anesthetic gases, radiation, cleaning chemicals, and controlled substances. The ability to remain calm, professional, and compassionate while working in emotionally challenging situations is essential.
