An Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Intern supports the EHS department in ensuring workplace compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Responsibilities include conducting safety walks in a processing environment, auditing, updating safety protocols, and assisting with incident investigations, root cause and risk assessments. An EHS Intern will often maintain chemical database, track training, and contribute to sustainability projects. Specialized projects during the internship include a SDS project and the preservation of driver HAZMAT qualification files under FMCSA/DOT regulations.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Compliance & Auditing: Assist with EHS inspections, hazard assessment reviews, and compliance audits for Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) regulations and environmental standards.
  • Safety Training: Prepare and/or conduct employee training, safety presentations, and safety orientation materials, as necessary.
  • Incident Investigation: Participate in root cause investigations for accidents, near-misses, and injuries, and help implement corrective actions.
  • Data Analysis: Maintain databases related to safety metrics, chemical inventories (SDS), and environmental compliance.
  • Risk Management: Perform job hazard analyses (JHA) for equipment or new processes to identify potential risks.
  • Data & Waste: Support hazardous waste management, calculate TRIR and DART.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Education: Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in EHS, Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), data management systems, and some knowledge of OSHA, EPA, RCRA, FMCSA and DOT, LARA
