INTERN POSITION
CITY OF ATLANTA DEPARTMENT OF LAW

General Description

The City of Atlanta Department of Law hosts its annual Summer Internship Program. This program provides students who are interested in public sector law the opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals while gaining knowledge and improving legal research, writing, and advocacy skills. It also offers participants the unique opportunity to gain experience in this multifaceted practice, including but not limited to:

  • Assisting with the provision of legal advice and counsel services to various departments within the City;

  • Learning civil litigation skills and assisting with trial preparation; and,

  • Gaining transactional law experience by assisting Attorneys with legal research and drafting.

Essential Functions

Legal Research: Conducting research into legal cases, statutes, precedents, and other relevant topics.

Document Drafting: Assisting with drafting legal documents such as motions, briefs, and demand letters.

Case File Review: Reviewing and organizing case files, discovery materials, and other relevant information.

Court Attendance: Attending court hearings, depositions, and mediations with supervisors.

Administrative Support: Performing clerical tasks like filing, copying, and managing calendars.

Client Interaction: Attending and taking notes at various meetings, including but not limited to City Council and Committee meetings; various board, agency, and commission meetings; client meetings, internal departmental meetings, etc., as appropriate.

Other Tasks: Assisting with preparing for trials, organizing evidence, and performing other duties as assigned. Assisting with the provision of legal advice and counsel services to various departments within the City; Learning civil litigation skills and assisting with trial preparation.

Gaining transactional law experience by assisting Attorneys with research and drafting;

Currently in high school or pursuing an Associate's, Bachelor’s or Juris Doctorate degree in an appropriate discipline for the department in which person is an intern. In the past two decades Atlanta has experienced unprecedented growth -- the official city population remains steady, at about 420,000, but the metro population has grown in the past decade by nearly 40%, from 2.9 million to 4.1 million people. A good measure of this growth is the ever-changing downtown skyline, along with skyscrapers constructed in the Midtown, Buckhead, and outer perimeter (fringing I-285) business districts.
