Job Description

Background

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are core principles at UNDP: we value diversity as an expression of the multiplicity of nations and cultures where we operate, we foster inclusion as a way of ensuring all personnel are empowered to contribute to our mission, and we ensure equity and fairness in all our actions. Taking a ‘leave no one behind’ approach to our diversity efforts means increasing representation of underserved populations. People who identify as belonging to marginalized or excluded populations are strongly encouraged to apply. Learn more about working at UNDP including our values and inspiring stories.

UNDP does not tolerate sexual exploitation and abuse, any kind of harassment, including sexual harassment, and discrimination. All selected candidates will, therefore, undergo rigorous reference and background checks.

Background:

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) operates in over 170 countries and territories, working to eradicate poverty and reduce inequalities and exclusion. It supports countries in developing policies, strengthening leadership and institutional capacities, fostering partnerships, and building resilience to sustain long-term development results.

UNDP has been present in Sri Lanka for over 55 years, supporting the country’s progress towards sustainable human development across economic, social, and environmental dimensions, guided by the Country Programme (2023–2027). The organization collaborates closely with the Government, civil society, private sector, and communities to identify development priorities and implement effective, inclusive solutions to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UNDP Sri Lanka delivers its support through an integrated Country Office approach, bringing together expertise across programme and operational areas to address interconnected development challenges. Within this framework, the Climate and Environment Team (CET) leads and supports UNDP’s work on environmental and climate challenges, focusing on Natural Resource Management and Innovative Financing; Sustainable Energy, Transport and Waste Management; and Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction. The team works closely with government institutions and other partners to support national priorities, strengthen resilience, fulfil international environmental and climate commitments, and promote inclusive and sustainable green development.
