The project concerns how fresh lubricant displaces old lubricant in wind turbine bearings, studied from a fluid dynamics perspective. Shell has already developed two simulation models of this process, and the next step in their research is physical validation of those models. My internship would focus on that validation step, closing the loop between what the simulations predict and what actually happens in a real bearing.

Internship project requires the design and construction of a plexiglass model of the bearing, which would be fabricated at the Shell workshop with support from their engineering team. The detailed CAD drawing would likely be produced by workshop engineers using Inventor (Shell's internal CAD environment), since the design needs to fit within Shell's systems rather than university-licensed software. Once built, the model would be used to test lubricant flow under realistic conditions. If that phase is successful, the lubricant would be doped with heavy metals so that the motion of the lubricant nuclei could be tracked in detail using X-ray (CT) imaging, which would let us see directly how fresh lubricant pushes out the old rather than only inferring it from simulation.
