The Interim Sub Dean primarily supports the Dean in overseeing non-academic discipline within College and occasionally supports the Heads of Wellbeing in the supervision and provision of welfare support. This is a responsible position, in which the Interim Sub Dean is frequently in the ‘front line’ of decanal work in the college.
The Interim Sub Dean is expected to assist the Dean and deputise for them when called upon to do so. They will carry authority delegated by the Dean and Heads of Wellbeing and should always act professionally, and in a manner which commands respect from undergraduate and graduate students. In particular, when on duty or reserve they need to be and remain able to carry out their duties promptly, properly, and conscientiously at all times.
The post is available from 10th May 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter and is offered until the 31st of December 2026 to cover the permanent job holder who is currently seconded to another role. It is a part-time role - of circa 10 hours per week (8 hours within office hours), occasional evening hours (2 hours monitoring students’ events), and rotas thereafter - during the three Oxford terms and the weeks immediately preceding and following full-term (10 weeks each term). The Interim Sub Dean will also work 4 hours per week outside of term, exclusive of agreed holidays. During term it is expected that the post-holder will be on-site; outside of term it may be possible to work remotely/flexibly.

Responsible to: The Dean (and on welfare issues the Heads of Wellbeing)
Liaison with: Lodge staff, Housekeeping, Catering, the Junior Welfare Deans and Gardening teams.
1 Note that the Lodge Porters are the first port of call for issues such as maintenance problems, complaints about noise, vandals, trespassing, fire alarms, and violations of College Regulations. The role of the Interim Sub Dean is to act as back-up in difficult cases.

The salary will be £5,820 per annum (at current rates). The anticipated start date will be 3rd week of Trinity Term or as soon as practicable thereafter and the contract will run until 31st of December 2026. The Interim Sub Dean will be required to work circa 8 hours per week (within office hours), occasional evening hours (2 hours per week), and rotas thereafter (on call or on reserve for 8/10 of term time – Friday evenings and weekends) - during the three Oxford terms and the weeks immediately preceding and following full-term (10 weeks each term) to ensure consistent coverage of decanal and welfare support during term time. Outside of term, the Interim Sub Dean is expected to work circa 4 hours per week (within office hours, and exceptionally in the evenings and weekends during the vacation periods), exclusive of agreed holidays.
