Interconnection and Transmission Director
Reporting to the Head of Energy Development, the Interconnection and Transmission Director leads the interconnection and transmission strategy for a utility-scale renewable and BESS portfolio, overseeing greenfield origination, M&A/JV technical diligence, interconnection execution, and grid-compliant design. This role owns technical risk management across ISO/RTO and non-ISO jurisdictions, drives optimized and bankable transmission/interconnection solutions and provides senior-level leadership to internal teams and external advisors through interconnection application, study, and agreement negotiation milestones through notice-to-proceed and into operations.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical guidance and review during greenfield, M&A, and JV diligence to ensure grid transmission and connection risks are mitigated or eliminated.
- Own interconnection and transmission strategy, governance, and decision-making across the development portfolio, including prioritization, resourcing, budgets, schedules, and executive reporting.
- Work with, manage, and coordinate project, business unit, and company priorities and goals to align interconnection and transmission execution with broader strategic objectives.
- Define transmission and interconnection design to reduce cost and construction duration while proactively identifying, quantifying, and mitigating technical, permitting, schedule, and constructability risks; specify the best technical solution based on asset requirements.
- Provide technical leadership for BESS integration including sizing and configuration impacts on interconnection studies, reactive/voltage support strategy, protection and control philosophy, compliance requirements, and deployment of grid-forming and grid-enhancing technologies where applicable.
- Carry out technical due diligence and risk assessment on interconnection and transmission reports and infrastructure.
- Carry out inspections for feasibility checks and alignment with the project requirements.
- Track and prioritize all interconnection and transmission applications, studies, deposits, and payments; maintain a risk register for queue position, milestones, readiness gaps, and cost exposure, and drive mitigation actions with internal teams and consultants.
- Lead end-to-end market interconnection application strategy and execution (including queue strategy, study management, model validation, and milestone readiness) across ERCOT, SPP, MISO, WECC, SERC and other applicable regions, proactively managing technical, regulatory, schedule, and cost risks through each study phase.
- Ensure that authorization documentation for interconnection requests and technical approvals is accurately prepared and submitted on time, reducing regulatory, schedule, and rework risk.
- Coordinate preparation of technical documentation for transmission and/or interconnection projects, ensuring technical consistency and audit-ready records to reduce commercial, claims, and compliance risk.
- Manage Technical and Legal Advisors and Consultants with clear scope, deliverables, quality standards, and timelines to reduce technical, schedule, and cost risk.
- Maintain relationships with DNO/TSO, ISO/RTO, and transmission owners to support grid applications and study progression, coordinating and directing external consultants as needed.
- Lead and manage, together with the Construction department, negotiations and development of EPC / ICP Contract Technical Appendices and Major Equipment Technical Specifications, including managing contractors and consultants to ensure scope clarity, quality, and schedule adherence.
- Serve as primary technical counterpart for ISO/RTOs, transmission owners, and counterparties through Generator Interconnection Agreement (GIA) and related agreement negotiations (e.g., construction, cost allocation, reimbursement, network upgrades), aligning commercial, legal, and technical positions to optimize risk allocation and bankability.
- Interact and support construction and businesses areas and serve as (PMQ) Person Most Qualified during interconnection and transmission discussions and activities.
- Support or help manage outside consultants/contractors with the operation and maintenance of FEI owned or constructed plants by providing grid expertise to the Asset Manager and O&M team managers, resolving compliance issues and reducing curtailment, reliability, and availability risks.
Requirements

- 10+ years of progressive experience in interconnection, transmission planning, or grid integration with demonstrated leadership of cross-functional teams and direct management of contractors/consultants delivering interconnection studies, modeling, transmission design, and owner’s engineer support; prior experience in utility-scale renewables and BESS preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to identify, quantify, and mitigate interconnection and transmission risks across the project lifecycle (technical, regulatory, schedule, cost, counterparty, and operational), and to communicate risk tradeoffs clearly to executive stakeholders.
- Proven ability to work in multiple interconnection jurisdictions with IAs (Interconnection Applications) and MMAs(Material Modification Assessment) applications.
