Job Description

About the role

The Telegraph is looking for an Interactives Journalist to join our Interactive Journalism team.

Interactive journalism is a growing part of how we tell stories at The Telegraph. We combine reporting, design, development and visual storytelling to create impactful, premium and audience-first journalism experiences.

Working closely with the Interactives Editors, you will help build and deliver ambitious storytelling projects ranging from immersive scrollytelling features and investigations to maps, data visualisation, emerging storytelling technologies and news-reactive tools (Please click for examples of each of these projects!)

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about digital storytelling and wants to develop their technical skills in a fast-paced newsroom environment.

You'll be supported to grow your skills over time and have the opportunity to learn from experienced Interactives Editors and developers to experiment with new tools and formats to help you develop.

This role would suit someone who wants to work at the intersection of journalism and technology. You enjoy solving problems, experimenting with new technologies and finding creative ways to bring journalism to life. You may have experimented with coding outside of your current role, through your studies or built projects.

Key responsibilities

  • Build interactive stories using existing templates and frameworks.
  • Support the development of new storytelling components and newsroom tools.
  • Prototype ideas quickly to test new formats and approaches.
  • Develop and adapt interactive experiences for breaking news and enterprise projects.
  • Create maps, timelines and simple data visualisations to support editorial storytelling.
  • Integrate visual assets including graphics, video and photography into interactive experiences.
  • Ensure projects work seamlessly across desktop and mobile devices through thorough QA testing.

Key skills

Essential:

  • Basic knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
  • An understanding of responsive web design principles.
  • Ability to learn new technologies and frameworks quickly.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and manage multiple deadlines.
  • A genuine interest in journalism, storytelling and audience experience.

Desirable:

  • Experience creating data visualisations using tools such as D3, Datawrapper or Flourish.
  • Familiarity with mapping tools and geospatial storytelling.
  • Experience with animation or motion design.
  • Understanding of accessibility best practices.
  • Experience working with APIs and structured datasets.
  • Interest in AI-assisted production workflows and emerging storytelling technologies.
  • Previous experience in a newsroom or editorial environment.
