Since 2011, KWY has worked to break the cycle of domestic and family violence, strengthen family wellbeing, and reduce the overrepresentation of Aboriginal children in the child protection system. Our services span family support, youth work, men’s behaviour change, kinship care, reunification, social and emotional wellbeing, research, and workforce development.

About the position... 

We have (5) full-time and part-time vacancies available for an initial 12-month period, with a high likelihood of extension. YAFIN Program was funded for delivery over the next nine years.

The Young Aboriginal Families in the North (YAFIN) program provides intensive, early intervention support to young, first-time parents, working from pre-birth to up to 2 years of age.

The program focuses on:

  • Preventing the removal of Aboriginal infants
  • Building parenting confidence and capability
  • Strengthening safe and stable home environments
  • Supporting infants to remain safe, connected, and thriving

As a YAFIN Practitioner, you will deliver intensive, culturally responsive case management to young parents and families with complex needs. You will work alongside families to support safety and long-term wellbeing outcomes through practical support, advocacy, and collaborative planning.

Key Responsibilities...

  • Provide intensive case management working with parents and extended family
  • Undertake risk assessments and safety planning, including pre-birth planning
  • Develop and implement family-led case plans
  • Support parents to build confidence and strengthen parenting capacity
  • Advocate for families and coordinate warm referrals with other relevant services
  • Work collaboratively with health, child protection, and community services
  • Maintain high-quality records, case notes, and reports
  • Participate in team collaboration, supervision, and cultural supervision

About you...

You are a skilled and motivated practitioner who is passionate about early intervention and working with Aboriginal families.

Essential

  • Experience in child protection, family violence, or infant/child health
  • Strong complex case management and crisis response skills
  • Understanding of trauma-informed therapeutic practice
  • Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities
  • Knowledge of maternal/infant health and early childhood development
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong communication and record-keeping skills

Desirable

  • Qualification in Social Work, Psychology, Community Services, or related field
  • Knowledge of issues impacting families, including DFSV, mental health, homelessness, and substance use
  • Knowledge of infant and early childhood development

The successful applicant will possess skills, experience, and knowledge in working with Aboriginal people to address Child Protection and Domestic and Family Violence concerns. The applicant

will operate within a therapeutic, trauma-informed framework. The applicant would have

demonstrated knowledge of case management and working with Aboriginal families.

Job requirements...

  • You must hold a current South Australian Driver's License or a license which permits you to drive in South Australia.
  • Successful candidates will be required to clear and maintain current probity checks including National Criminal History Record Check (Police Clearance) and Working with Children Check (applicants need to hold a current WWCC to apply).

The Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) has been providing outstanding care for Victoria's children and their families for over 147 years.

We are the major specialist paediatric hospital in Victoria and our care extends to children from Tasmania, southern New South Wales and other states around Australia and overseas.
