The opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Intellectual Property (IP) Manager to join CSIRO’s award-winning IP Team. This role offers the chance to work at the forefront of science and innovation, supporting high-performing teams in our Energy Research Unit

As the IP Manager, you will play a key role in managing CSIRO’s IP portfolio, providing specialist advice to senior leaders, and support commercialisation strategies that maximise research impact and revenue. You will work with cross-functional teams to drive the opportunities pipeline and help build organisational capability in IP management and governance.

Your high-level duties will include:

  • Working as part of the Legal team in building and exploiting IP assets.
  • Engaging with Research Program Leaders and technical staff in identifying, developing, protecting and managing IP assets.
  • Managing IP for the Energy sector, working with external attorneys and internal stakeholders in relation to registrable IP.
  • Contributing high level expertise and understanding of a broad range of IP issues and complex business problems, including patents, copyright, designs and trademarks.
  • Leading internal education initiatives and contribute to organisational IP capability development.

Salary: AU$135k – AU$151k per annum + 15.4% superannuation

As the successful candidate, you will bring:

  • Registered Patent Attorney (AU or NZ), or near qualified patent attorney with a sound understanding of patent law and practise, validity & infringement, trademark law and practise.
  • A degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or experience working on patentable subject matter from chemical or chemical processing industry sectors.
  • Demonstrated achievement in advisory or managerial roles in relation to capture and exploitation of registered IP.
  • Ability to work independently, providing pragmatic solutions in managing and exploiting intellectual property.
  • A strong history of establishing and working effectively in teams, building trust and providing IP advice during commercial transactions.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to foster and develop strong relationships in cross functional teams and with external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to generate improved solutions to complex problems and resolve complaints using creativity, reasoning and experience.

    Desirable:
  • Previous experience in an in-house IP management role.
  • Experience advising on technology transactions and collaborations between government departments and agencies, universities, commercial entities and other research organisations.
