About NAAFLS

NAAFLS is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation and the only victim-based Family Violence Prevention Legal Service operating in remote communities across the Top End of the Northern Territory. With offices in Darwin, Katherine and Nhulunbuy, we service over 40 remote communities, delivering culturally responsive legal representation in Family Law, Child Protection and Domestic & Family Violence.

Our unique holistic service model brings lawyers together with Aboriginal Client Support Officers and Case Workers—ensuring our clients are supported not just legally, but culturally and safely.

About the Role

The Intake Officer FVPLS plays an important role as the first point of contact for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander victim-survivors accessing NAAFLS services. Working within a culturally safe and healing-informed framework, you will support clients through intake, assessment, triage, and referral processes while helping reduce re-traumatisation and ensuring clients feel safe, heard, and supported from their first interaction.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct trauma-informed intake assessments using a conversational and culturally responsive approach.
• Identify client needs, risks, and priority concerns including safety, housing, children, and wellbeing.
• Complete eligibility screening and triage clients to appropriate legal, non-legal, or community support services.
• Support high-risk matters through timely escalation and safety-focused responses.
• Facilitate warm handovers to legal and case management staff to minimise clients repeating their story.
• Maintain accurate intake records, consent documentation, and case notes within organisational systems.
• Work collaboratively with internal teams and external service providers to support coordinated service delivery.

About You

You are compassionate, organised, and committed to culturally safe practice. You understand the impacts of trauma and family violence and can communicate sensitively with people experiencing distress or crisis. You work well both independently and collaboratively and are confident balancing client support with accurate administration and record keeping.

What We’re Looking For

Essential criteria:

• Strong understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal communities in the Top End, including domestic, family, and sexual violence.
• Experience providing culturally safe services to Aboriginal victim-survivors.
• Demonstrated experience conducting risk assessments and supporting safety planning.
• Experience maintaining accurate records and using case management systems.
• Ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal clients experiencing trauma.
• Strong understanding of confidentiality and professional boundaries.
• Ability to build positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Flexible, non-judgemental, and client-focused approach to service delivery.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary environment.
• Willingness to participate in training, reflective practice, and professional development.
• Able to obtain a WWCC and satisfactory Criminal History Check.

Desirable Criteria

• Qualifications in Social Work, Community Services, or a related field.
• Experience supporting Aboriginal clients impacted by trauma.
• Understanding of the legal system in relation to domestic, family, and sexual violence.
