Job Description

An instrumentation specialist is responsible for installing, calibrating, maintaining, and repairing the electrical, electronic, and pneumatic equipment used to monitor and control automated systems. They play a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and safety of manufacturing and industrial processes by working with systems like programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA). It is a hands-on, detail-oriented, and physically demanding role within a manufacturing or foundry environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the installation and commissioning of new instrumentation and control systems, including wiring, mounting, and testing.
  • Perform routine and emergency maintenance on all equipment, such as transmitters, indicators, and controllers.
  • Calibrate instruments using specialized tools and software to ensure they operate within specified parameters.
  • Troubleshoot complex systems to diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, and software-related issues.
  • Interpret technical documents, including piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), blueprints, and wiring schematics.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all maintenance, calibrations, and repairs performed on equipment. Document repair actions, irregularities, and ongoing maintenance needs.
  • Provide technical guidance, expertise, and on-the-job training to Operations and Maintenance personnel. Serve as a subject matter expert during complex repair scenarios.
  • Ensure all work is compliant with industry standards and safety regulations, such as OSHA and electrical codes. Enforce and adhere to all foundry-specific safety protocols, including those for molten metal handling, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and personal protective equipment (PPE) in high-temperature environments.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with engineers and other production and maintenance teams to improve manufacturing processes and equipment performance.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5-7 years of related electrical or electronics experience in industrial manufacturing.
  • An associate degree or technical certification in instrumentation, electronics, or a related field is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of electronic, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems, including PLCs, motors, and control valves.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking and analysis to diagnose and resolve technical issues.
  • Meticulous approach to work to ensure high precision in measurements and calibrations.
  • Expertise in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, blueprints, and technical manuals.
  • Proficiency with a variety of hand, power, and diagnostic tools.
  • Strong problem-solving and root cause analysis abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate with colleagues and document work.
  • This role requires working in a loud, dusty, and high-temperature environment. The candidate must be capable of lifting heavy objects, working in confined spaces, and being on call for emergency repairs.
  • The ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and on-call rotations, may be required.
  • Physical demands can include heavy lifting, bending, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
