POSITION: Instrumentation Mechanician

JOB GRADING: C – Lower

DEPARTMENT: Technical Business Intelligence – C&I

SITE: South Deep Gold Mine

The Instrumentation Mechanician is accountable for the safe and timely execution of scheduled and ad hoc maintenance and expansion of the South Deep surface and underground C&I systems, networks and associated instrumentation portfolio to enable and support the mine’s modernisation drive through the deployment of advanced technology.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Relevant Engineering Instrumentation Trade Certificate
  • At least 3 years’ experience in C&I systems in a mining environment, with :
    • Industrial Field Instrumentation and Operational Technology (OT) infrastructure; and
    • Ethernet, IP, Control Net, Device Net, HART or similar protocols and support
  • Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

Key Competencies:

  • Proven track record in personal safety leadership
  • Proven interpersonal, collaborative and communication skills
  • Independent, proactive thinker and ability to schedule and deliver work within tight deadlines
  • Proven capability to interpret Industrial Field Instrumentation layouts and equipment/components
  • Proficiency on the installation, repair and calibration of measuring instrumentation
  • Proven track record of working with different operating systems
  • Advanced computer literacy with MS Office proficiency

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the Health and Safety of self and team members by applying relevant standards and procedures in the planning and execution of operational activities
  • Contribute to the culture of Zero Harm by participating in and contributing to operational safety campaigns, applying relevant legislative, operational and safe work standards and regulations and, instituting and monitoring appropriate remedial actions as required
  • Champion the company’s strategies and initiatives to promote a respectful, diverse and inclusive workplace culture.
  • Ensure that safe work procedures and risk assessments are conducted and in place
  • Perform scheduled and spontaneous equipment, installation and workplace inspections in accordance with manufacturing standards and operational guidelines
  • Conduct scheduled and ad hoc maintenance, installations and projects on surface and underground C&I related systems and networks, field instruments and equipment. These include telephonic and related communication systems, leaky feeder infrastructure, access control, detection and monitoring systems e.g. seismicity, fire detection, etc., video surveillance and the deployment of advanced Trackless fleet Proximity, Collision Avoidance and Condition Monitoring systems
  • Participate in C&I systems improvement/optimisation sessions and recommend equipment and systems improvements to enhance overall performance
  • Engage in ongoing training and related activities to continuously improve personal skills and competencies
  • Generate reports to assist senior management with informed decision-making
