Job Description

The Department of Philosophy at the American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications for a full-time Instructor in Community Engaged Learning This position is dedicated full-time to teaching PHIL 200, a course designed by the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) to fulfill the university's General Education requirement in Community Engaged Learning (CEL). The instructor will work closely with CCE and will combine in-person teaching, student mentorship, coordination with campus units, and oversight of community placements to ensure that learning objectives and outcomes are met. Below is a brief description of PHIL 200:

  • PHIL 200A is an online self-paced component introducing students to the (a) fundamentals of community engagement that include the principles, values and key concepts of community engagement; and (b) field reports developed by AUB students tackling prominent societal challenges in the Global South.
  • PHIL 200B includes seminars covering topics related to the social, political, and psychological structures that shape communities affected by marginalization, crisis, and intergenerational trauma, while examining methods and processes for analyzing their multidimensional facets in order to develop workable solutions. Additionally, the seminars engage students in real-life discussions on timely and sometimes controversial topics, guided by empathy, commitment, mutuality, and advocacy as core values of CCE.
  • PHIL 200B integrates experiential learning opportunities that engage students in a wide range of volunteering rotations and initiatives serving vulnerable communities. These opportunities are delivered in Lebanon through partnerships with the public sector and a network of credible community-based organizations, and they provide structured, hands-on experience to students while reinforcing the community engagement values addressed in the seminars.

Position Responsibilities

  • Teach assigned sections of PHIL 200(A and B)

  • Prepare and deliver engaging and relevant seminars in PHIL 200B

  • Facilitate class discussions using inclusive and student-centered pedagogies

  • Design, administer, and grade assignments and final examinations that align with course learning outcomes

  • Hold regular office hours to guide, and motivate students to take initiative and meet course requirements effectively

  • Monitor and evaluate student progress through collecting tracking sheets student reflections, and host organization feedback (PHIL 200B)

  • Document student engagement and achievements in multimedia formats (e.g., success stories, videos, social media content)

  • Participate in the evaluation of the course content to ensure academic rigor, inclusion, and alignment with best practices

  • Build positive relationships with students, colleagues, and community partners

  • Perform relevant tasks including supporting the development of field reports, designing new elements and materials, and upskilling to remain up-to-date with emerging trends and tools

  • Develop, update, and maintain high-quality digital course materials for the online self-paced component (PHIL 200A)

  • Design and implement assessments aligned with course learning outcomes

  • Manage and utilize AUB’s Learning Management System (LMS) to track student engagement, progress, and performance

  • Carry out ongoing outreach activities with the public sector and community based organizations serving vulnerable populations to secure volunteering placements for students in close coordination with CCE

  • Coordinate volunteering placements in alignment with course objectives and in close coordination with CCE

Qualifications

Applicants should possess the following qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in the social sciences, education, public policy, health sciences, or a related field
  • Demonstrated teaching and facilitation skills, preferably in the context of experiential learning or community engagement
  • At least five years of relevant professional experience, including a minimum of three years of teaching at the higher education level
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  • Proficiency with learning management systems (LMS) and relevant educational tools
  • Knowledge of current scholarship and best practices in community-engaged learning pedagogy
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and to ethical practices in community engagement
