Position: Instructional Student Assistant (ISA) for Physics and Engineering

The Department of Physics & Engineering is seeking Instructional Student Assistant (ISA) applicants for its programs.

The department is seeking qualified students for grading and/or lab/activity support as Instructional Student Assistant for courses that are appropriate in our curriculum in any given semester. Students need to apply each semester. Faculty recommendations are welcomed.

Anticipated Appointment Dates This position is open until it is filled. If you have applied and no other positions are available, you will be notified.

Fall 2026: August 17, 2026 – December 19, 2026

Spring 2027: January 20, 2027 – May 26, 2027

Hours 0-20 hours per week.

Job Duties may include the following, but will be dependent upon the specific course to which the instructional student assistant will be assigned, as well as upon the specific needs of the faculty member in charge of the course:

• Provide instructional support to assigned instructors by grading papers in a variety of courses or facilitating group work and discussions.
• Assist the instructor in lab/activity sessions, and/or perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair in consultation with the appropriate faculty member.
• Department’s website management.
• Canvas management.
• Perform individual and/or group academic support

Qualifications:

• Minimum GPA 2.5
• Must have completed related courses with a decent grade.
• Demonstrated commitment to excellence built on merit, talent, diversity, accessibility, and equal opportunity for all.
• Demonstrated commitment to fostering a welcoming learning environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum GPA 3.0
• Solid writing and speaking skills.
• Solid study skills and time management skills.

Instruction Student Assistant additional information regarding assignment:

The California State University Instructional Student Assistant Classification and Qualification Standards

• Evaluations: ISA's may be evaluated per CBA, Unit 11, Article 8
• Salary: Each department has different salary scales. Please check with your department for your Base Salary. The Salary range for Instructional Student Assistants starts at $17.86 per an hour.
• Assignments: Assignments are made by the Department Chair and/or instructors after consultation with the candidate.
• Duties Form: Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Unit 11, a Duties Form (see Appendix E of the CBA) will be completed between the Department and Academic Student Employee. This form substantiates the jobs included for the department Instructional Student Assistant position.
• Instructional Student Assistant positions are for matriculated students at CSUB.
• Students are limited to 20-hours of part-time work on campus.

Education Code 89521 Requirements: Applicants will be required to disclose whether they have received a final administrative decision or final judicial decision determining that they have committed sexual harassment within the last seven years, only after a determination is made that they meet the minimum qualifications for the position, and before an offer of employment is extended.
